Help! Have broke my van

I've finished fitting the Westfalia towing electrics. Took some time but l went ok. Wiring into the Body Control Module (BCM) was a bit daunting at first but quite easy. When I reconnected the battery at first all seemed fine but I now had a few electrical issues:

1) The radio asks for a code which I don't seem to have
2) The radiator fan is running continuously
3) The A/C unit doesn't seem to be working. When turning on the car lights everything lights up internally inside the van except the heating and A/C controls.

I can only assume that when playing with the million wires into the BCM, I must have accidentally worked a couple loose or something. I can see tracking down the issue could be frustrating.

Don't suppose anyone has had similar issues...?

I haven't even checked whether the towing electrics work yet!

Not so good , can't help but ...thats why i leave some things to the experts ...the VW specialist
Electric wiring can be hell and a mistake is somtimes small but can have hudge conceqenses
Hope you get things strait!

Looks like the radiator fan is running because the air/con unit isn't working so 1 fault.

There's no lights on the unit on the dash so it's like the power to it has been disconnected. I've checked and the air con doesn't seem to be controlled by the BCM so doesn't seem like I've done anything wrong there after all.

The towing electric involve wiring under the passenger seat but I think that's all to do with the lesiure battery stuff (?) so if that's the case then I'm guessing I've just knocked a connecting loose under the dash some where but I don't know where the air con wiring runs.

It could I suppose be as simple as a fuse blowing when I reconnected the battery but I think that might be wishful thinking as everything else works fine.

Hi Mark from what I understand the van's brain has to be told that the towbar electrics have been fitted, for this it needs to be connected up to a laptop running the VW diagnostic software. A quick Google threw this up:

"From 2010 the GP (face lift) model transporter has a ECU stability program which needs to be activated when fitted tow bars. This is not only a safety issue but is also essential for VW warranty. To do this there is significantly more wiring and a separate internal box which is required, but the ECU also needs re-program (which does lots of clever things like disabling factory revering sensors when towing)."

Hope you get it sorted

Colin

Thanks Colin, I understand I need to get the van recoded to turn on the towbar stuff. But I can't believe that's the reasont he climatic air/con is not turning ok surely?

Sometimes when you make a change it has unintended consequences, I think you need someone with knowledge of the programming software (is it VagCom?); I'm pretty sure there is someone on here who is familiar with it.

Mark,

I had a long standing fault with the fan on permanently and some A/C issues that took VW weeks to figure out... including threatening to have to take the dash out and trace the wiring.

In the end it turned out to be a fuse under the cup holder (I use the term loosely) in the centre console...

SC35 if memory serves me correct, it was one of the small 5A ones I believe. Although mine is a prefacelift and things may be a little different.

I'd give them a quick check, got to be worth a try.

Hope this helps.

Rgds

Mark

Just checked fuses under the cup holder but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Don't think anything under the passenger seat is likely to affect air con?

What I guess I can do is h book up Vagcom and check for fault codes. Need to get hold of a cable and software.

You need to make sure you get the one that works with the Canbus on the T5, hopefully someone on here will be able to help on that. (I know that the widely available ones don't work, even though they say can be used on any VW)

Just double checked every fuse and all look good. Starting to run out of ideas ;-(

Who did you buy the kit off? They may have a list of installers and there may be one near you?

It the pfjones kit that many on here have fitted before. I dont know if it the kit thats causing the problem or Ive broken something else while fitting although I'd ha e no idea what. Everything else works fine. Just no power to the heating/ac u it on the dash. Doesn't light up and the blower works but you can redirect it or turn ac on and off.

Have you tried contacting PF Jones? They offer free advice and a fitting support line ...

Waiting to hear back from them to see if they can help. But looking at the wiring that I've had to do I can't see how any of it should affect the air con/ heating controls.

Have you checked every fuse ?? I had an issue when my hook up was fitted with a replay buzzing. The fuse was under the passenger seat I think, there are a few banks of fuses you need to check

Have checked all fuses under cup holder but not all under passenger seat yet. But I didn't think any of those affected anything but camping stuff. Can you reach them without taking the seat out?

Right checked all those fuses too now and all good. Next thing I guess is to take the dash again and double check akk the wiring I did there. Poo.

Do you know someone with a fault code Reader? It might show up through the On Board Diagnostics.

I would check all the plugs you have removed are all seated correctly, take out & replace If not done already.
