ID Buzz camper ”on the cards soon”

According to California Chris, a camper version of a LWB Buzz is “on the cards”.
A new Cali Buzz perhaps?

I have nothing against electric vehicles but an electric camper does not currently appeal to me. The ID Buzz has a real world range of around 200 miles, that's too limiting for the campervanning our family does.

Hopefully battery technology will advance to a point where range is good enough.

If the claims of BYD that they can recharge 250 miles worth of range in 5 mins is true, then we’re getting there. All we need is a blanket charging infrastructure across Europe Easy peasy.

Don't bet on it. The interior dimensions are also compromised. Add a battery and motors and the floor increases in height. Both the MV and Buzz are poorly suited for extended Campervan family touring.

I'd love a roomy electric camper with good range. If it can tick those boxes, I'll be test driving for sure, price dependent.

I doubt I will ever own one, however I too am interested in the direction that VW are possibly taking the Cali.
Clearly the Buzz is being developed into a more appealing offer, eg LWB, AWD, but, and it’s a big but, it will surely be heavy even without a payload.
I’d certainly take it on try before you buy test outing, just for the hell of it.

That said, and it is a huge issue, wouldn’t it be great to get to a campsite, plug in as normal, and have another 200 miles ready for the next stop on your tour?

Except that the majority of campsites don't allow that, and charging from a 13 amp campsite EHU socket will take 4.5 hrs / 10KW of EV battery which gives about 30 miles of predicted range.

Also factor in cooking on a induction hob several times which will be a significant draw on the battery and you may be closer to 150 miles!

A lot of these reservations about range, cooking, heating etc could be overcome with a well designed electric vehicle. Not a guarantee that VW can deliver on that though of course.

These things have 86kwh batteries. A typical camper induction hob would be what, 1500W (not run constantly). Similar for an electric heater (more likely to be on overnight, 8 hours on low, say 750W. That’s 6Kwh. 80kwh left ).

Understood. Calculations regarding eleclickertry are beyond me.

But once the world of camping has adapted to EV, wouldn’t it be amazing.

Even at the rates specified you could easily move on after a couple of days at each spot.

I bet you stopped for a break in that journey. You charge then. These things (Buzz) will do 20-80% in half an hour. Oban is easily reachable on one full charge anyway.

334 miles for me to oban. not many charging opportunities in the hebrides. far better parked on the beach overnight than in a carpark charging a milk float. ev of any kind would not suit me.

It’s still very possible but I know you’re not interested. As it happens I think for campervan uses EV technology and infrastructure isn’t there yet. When it is, on current form, VW won’t be the people to deliver it. We’re a minimum of 3 years off.
