Leaving your Cali at the airport

We're off for some sun shortly and have booked to park in the official secure airport parking at Gatwick. It cost just under £100 for a week. That's fine with me as I keep the keys and it's more secure. It's also very convenient being right next to the South Terminal. I insure with Devitt Insurance via the Caravan and Motorhome Club and they don't have any issues with our Cali being left there for a week.

Actually, I am more concerned about my paint work. The last time I used this car park it was nearly full. So I had to leave the car in one of the only remaining places, which happened to be directly under the flight path for landing aircraft. As this carpark is located just outside of the airport boundary, the landing planes are very very low as they pass over the carpark. After returning from that trip I found that the entire car had a surface texture like course sand paper. This gritty finish was fixed fast to the paintwork and windows and took hours of elbow grease and product to restore back to normal. I don't know for sure but I suspect that the cause was a weeks worth of two and four engined heavy jets crop dusting the carpark with their particulate exhaust emissions and probably some unburnt or partially burnt fuel to act as a mild solvent? There was no long term damage done but it did cause me a lot of hard work to get the paint work back to normal.

Anyone else had experience of this issue?

I realise this is an old-ish thread, however I'd appreciate any advice. I'm currently with Caravan Guard and they have a similar clause to Comfort - i.e. if you leave your vehicle somewhere other than your home address for more than 48 hours you need to tell them. That's not in itself an issue, its just that they then say 'in that case it's not insured' (eithout even giving you the option to pay more to extend the insurance...). I'm prepared to concel my insurance with Caravan Guard, however does anyone have any recomemndations for a differnt (better) insurance company that a) recognises the value of a Cali and b) doesnt have this nonsense about not insuring it if they feel like it?

Agree with Welshgas. I gave up on Comfort a couple of years ago because I had to leave my Cali in a campsite for a couple of days whilst I went on a multi-day kayak trip. They wouldn’t even take an additional premium. Caravan and Motorhome Club have no such restriction.

Is there much of a price difference between Comfort and C and M?

I moved about 3 years ago. C&MC asked what my Comfort renewal was and beat it by £10. And its only increased slightly since then. My last premium actually reduced which is presumably because I have moved to a lower risk area.

Caravan and Motorhome Club.
+1 for these....

I spent weeks, well 7 to be exact, getting and comparing quotes and cover and no-one - and I mean no-one beats them for cover.
Price wise - you may want to take out a small loan compared to regular Insurance but for my first year it was peace of mind.
I've heard LV are priced similarly to cars, and cover is good, or at least adequate for most.

This works. I temporarily moved to Admiral one year and CAMC beat their renewal the next year even though their cover is vastly superior. They’ve stayed competitive for me ever since.IMG_9659.jpeg
