Lighting the hob first time

Very often the flame goes out after the first ignition attempt, even after holding the gas knob down for a few seconds with the flame lit. On the second attempt it always stays alight. Is there a knack to avoiding this?

I had assumed it was a Safety feature to make sure the hub had lit properly and not just gone straight out.

There is a Flame Failure device so it has to heat up fully or the gas is cut off. Just hold the gas knob down for a little longer.
