Lubrication of T5 Heater Control Cables

Over the years the knob which controls the flow of air to the various outlets in my 2008 T5 is becoming increasingly stiff to operate. I'm assuming this is a lubrication issue to physical control cables and/or flow valves.
Does anyone know how to access the back of the control knob and lubricate the cables etc?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Taking the top dash tray, head unit out and facia trim is fairly easy - Google will be your friend if you need to find out how to
