Major issue with gas safe

Had the same problem recently and found this thread useful. I didn't fancy the brute force approach and so had a go at releasing the lid by turning the lid anticlockwise whilst lifting the lid up (there's a fair bit of slop in the threads) and then giving the lid a sharp twat down and repeating. This worked for me after just a couple of repeats but I may have just been lucky?
I have attached a photo of the regulator (in the now correct downward facing position) and the bottom side of the lid for those who may have the same problem.
In order to prevent this from happening again I have printed some infill pieces and a locking ring that holds them in position (and adhesive! my printer wasn't quite big enough to print one piece) although any 3mm thick material could be glued in part to prevent the ridges on the underside of the lid from jamming on the regulator. I guess you could also remove the ridges but I didn't want to modify the lid too much.

A little off topic but I found tightening the 5 sided nut on the regulator a bit of a pain and so I printed a spanner in PETG - works a treat and here is the .STL file for anyone with a printer who fancies their own ;-)
