After 7 1/2 years and 95,000 miles our engine battery has come to the end of its life and needs replacing.

VW are quoting £331 to supply and fit.
Kwik Fit are quoting £290
The local parts’ shop is quoting £245 - Varta 80Ah 580 901 080

Tanya batteries is £170 including delivery.

How easy is it to change a battery and retain, eg, radio coding?

Or should an incompetent like me pay the extra to get it fitted by someone who knows what they are doing?

Do you have an OBD Eleven? This makes it very very easy to do. Typically if swapping for the same size you don’t need to do anything, but it’s good practice to change the serial number via a VCDS or OBD Eleven (Carista might work too but don’t have one) as this tells the smart BMS that there’s a new battery. Just change to any number like 12345678 (8 digits).

Nope - I have none of those.

If it were me, I’d buy an OBD Eleven as they are fairly cheap and do it myself. Still cheaper than any shop to do. And then you have the device to do other one click app adaptations. It’s a fantastic piece of kit.

One little thing though, I had problems doing this on an iPhone (all other adaptations worked fine) and used an old Android phone I had which worked fine. Might be a bug with the iOS version. Likely fixed by now but just so you’re aware.

Tanya and swap yourself. You might get a few warning lights on dash for a couple of miles while the vehicle computer resets itself.
You don't Have To do any software changes regarding a new battery of the same type and amps it just takes a little longer for the smart charging system to get in sync. Changing the serial number using OBD Eleven or Carista just speeds up that process.

Thanks WG, useful as ever.

Battery ordered. I’ll probably change the battery on Tuesday.

The old battery I’ll combine with new a 100w solar panel I’ll install on the roof of our garden summerhouse, and a solar charger I have lying around to give light in the summer house and over our chicken house and chicken run.

Good idea.
Worthwhile getting a Carista, Black Friday deals, aa you can tweak various settings or read Diagnostic Codes so you can approach the Dealership with some fore knowledge. Works on many makes and cars.
