Hi, Since i bought the van I haven't created a login etc. for the onboard tech (Pro System). I have read the manual and for the life of me I am struggling to see what the benefits are other than I need to have an expensive (more than average) e- sim and i can then see basic information. From what I read the tech available vis the app isn't that great either. Can someone help me, am I missing something, is it worth it and what benefits are there really?

Thanks in advance

The login mainly is mainly for the system to know what connected services you have and keep them active. Such as remote unlocking via app. Weather etc, we never use, nor maps. I don't know if the OTA is also based on being logged in, but if it is you would need to be logged in to get the infrequent OTA system updates.

OTA - Over the air updates.

So am I right i need an e-sim and it needs to be vis VW and the only advantage is open with app, and OTA updates?

All cars nowadays have an e sim. It’s a built in module that sits under the drivers seat. As mentioned, I don’t know if you HAVE to be logged in for it to update, but you do have to be logged in for some “online” features to work, like app lock and unlock.

The vehicle has an e-sim that is used by VW for software updates to the vehicle, Infotainment system and SatNav, utilising the We Connect system that you get for 3 yrs from first registration. After that expires you can renew on an annual basis although I gather this might be changing to a monthly on going subscription model, cancel any time.
Under the We Connect system you have access to the Volkswagen App with various functions etc.

Now the bit you are getting confused about is:

The built in e-sim can be used for data within the vehicle. If activated the vehicle acts like a wifi hot spot. You can tether your iPad to it and if you pay for a Cubic Data plan then your iPad is connecting to the internet via the vehicle e-sim and your Cubic data plan. Also you can stream Apple Music on the Infotainment system, if you have an Apple Music subscription, and you get access to over a 1000 Free Internet “ Radio “ stations/streams.
