When I pull away, usually only first thing in the morning, I hear and feel a thud from the back of the van. I’m sure it is the rear brake pads binding and releasing late. Does anyone else experience this? I drive it every day and there’s no rust or residue on the disks.

Are you on an incline when you pull away in the morning?

Lots vehicles get this in wet weather, leave it in gear (or park for DSG) and don’t use the handbrake

As said above, the rear brakes do stick / bind to the discs in an amazingly short period of time (over night).
It’s probably a feature of the Hill start / hand brake mech.
It’s never bothered me, I simply put it in gear and drive away.
if you are looking for a solution, I’m not sure you will find one.

if it does it other than first thing after being parked up for a day or so, or when you are not on a slooe, you may want to have it looked at.
