Hello fellow members.
Quick question if I may. What is the thickness of the friction material on a NEW set of rear brake pads?

Looking forward to your replies and thank you for reading this post.

Chris.

Sometimes Depends on the make of the pads. (Especially with front pads)

Cali rear pads are all the same fitment (size disc) .

If you know the brand you can google the part and it should tell you , motor factors such as Euro car parts will offer a range of options , just put in your registration number

Here is the spec for Padgid rear pads (from ECP website)

Example Bosch, Brembo and Pagid are all 17.7 mm thick out of the box. (Two other makes are also 17.7mm thk, so it's pretty safe to say 17.7mm thick is standard

I hope that helps

17.7? Ive never seen a set of pads with that much meat on them unless you’re including the metal back plate?

17.7mm is including the back plate . (I.e the thickness of the pad as manufactured)

A new set of Pagid rear pads = 5.5mm steel back plate + integrated anti squeal plate 0.5mm + 12mm friction material ( approximately )

Here is a general guide to assist in decision making.
For clarity, the thickness shown in the chart is the thickness of the friction material only, (not including the back plate thickness)

I’m guessing a dealer is telling you there’s “x” mm left and that they need replacing now ? :). Could still plenty of meat left on them
Correct. Strangely enough the service a year ago mentioned only 2mm left. The latest service a couple of months ago stated 3mm left. What can I expect at the next service 4mm?

Easy and cheap job to do by the way.
