Hi guys, currently in a 2012 Beach and someone has retrofitted an all singing and dancing Kenwood model (DNX516DABS) - that drives me nuts.

Seems to be they have kept the original OEM plugs and used adapters so all good there.

If I buy a cheap used VW RCD310 is it simple to plug back in or does it need coding or similar?

And are all VW RCD 310 units the same or are they model specific for the Polo, Golf, Cali etc?

And if anyone has replaced theirs and want to move the old 310 on please let me know!

Hi Max,

The Factory RCD will need a code to unlock it once it is hooked up to your van.

Many of the sellers provide this.

You can "buy" the code online if required.

Have you look at the RNS510 , blue tooth, hands free , Sat Nav and DVD player !

I know Sat Nav solutions in Surbiton are able to supply the later Head units (fitted to T6) and make them work in a T5.

I have no doubt they will be able unlock a unit if required

Thanks for that - TBH very rarely use the in car unit and if we do I like nothing more than meandering through random French FM stations so all I need is the 310.

They seem pretty easy/cheap to find on eBay but just not sure if the fascia part is specific to the Cali or one from any VW model will fit?

How much does a 'code' cost roughly?

You'll have to search for that, usually you send the unit serial number and then you get the. Ode emailed to you. I have seen this service on Ebay in the past.
Anyone selling s legit unit should have the code

I’m curious, what is wrong with the Kenwood?
As an alternative you could get a T6 Discover Media unit, that I believe will fit. That gives you CarPlay as well.

VW RCD310 Should just plug straight in. If required you can buy the security code off eBay for approx £5, you just send the serial number of the unit and they send the code. (We sold ours a few years ago but couldn’t find the code to pass to the new buyer.)

But would recommend replacing with a new or 2nd hand Kenwood 8019 or 8021, then you get wireless CarPlay (Waze etc), WhatsApp over speech etc; You might also need a kenwood interface lead depending on what is currently fitted to get the steering wheel controls. @Absolut5 Audio ltd will be able to tell you what you need.

Thanks guys - as above, call me a Luddite ;) but I just don't need or want 99% of the functionality of the Kenwood.

Anyone help on this bit?

It should be standard double din size, can't help regarding model specific, I wouldn't have thought VW would restrict themselves as far as model specific radios

Thanks - that's what I guessed - they must have purchased millions of these 310's - you never know with car companies though!
