Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible to take off the inner review mirror of the GC 600 (2021).

I googled it, but could only find information about the Golf IV. I searched here and couldn't find anything either. Wednesday I contacted my VW dealer but he didn't get back to me yet.

I ordered the Garmin Camper 795 which after a successful test would like to mount on the place where the rear view mirror is now. Power for the sat nav will come from the Nextbase dashcam (adapter).

Has somebody took of the mirror and could let me know how it works (without to damage anthing), please.

Thank you for your help.

Regards,
Eberhard

I am due to have my windscreen replaced next Wednesday and considering asking if the rear view mirror can remain off. If I do, I’ll report back. Still not sure whether to have it installed again or not at this stage or even if it is an option to remain off!

It would be worth checking that removing the mirror won’t fail an MOT. I understand that you can remove it if there is no rear visibility due to a bulkhead etc but if they consider the small rear window adequate to see rearward you might come unstuck.

Looks like you are correct! From what I have just read….M1 classed vehicles (includes motor caravans) require 3 modes of viewing to the rear, 1 wing mirror each side and an internal rear view mirror.

even though the rear window in the GC is practically useless!!

Same with my Joker, next no rear visibility but still has a mirror.
Also worth checking what sensors are integrated into the back of the mirror.

Well, as far as I can see my mirror has no "special functions". It is just a mirror.

I was hoping that it would be easy to remove the mirror with turning or pushing. I found information of how to replace the mirror in a Golf IV with just "turning" it. So I tried it (very carefully) but of course it didn't move, not for a mm.

I got the Garmin Camper 795 delivered and started my tests (heavily tampered by a Covid infection  ). But if I plan to keep the Garmin Sat Nav the best place would be where the mirror is now.

Over a week ago I contacted my VW dealer about this, but they did not come back to me yet.

Eberhard

Can you not fix the Garmin to the mirror. Then easy to move to get perfect line of sight.

Hello @WelshGas.

I thought about this too. But so far I did not find a good solution for this. But to be fair, since I received the Garmin I am not in a mood to do a lot of "experimenting" and "testing". At the moment I prefer to sleep a lot.

In theory that would be the best solution (well, technically of course, ecstatically I don't know).

Command Strips will do the job easily. The set consists of 2 strips, 1 on the Garmin 1 on the mirror and they stick together with a velcro type system. Easily removed without damaging either surface.

OK, I spend a wee bit more time with the Garmin Camper 795. Let me divide this into 3x topics:
  • Hardware installation
  • Software connection
  • Software usage
Hardware installation

I searched again to find information of how to remove the mirror - no luck. What I have found was a spare part:

The reason why I put this in the post is because it seems to prove that the mirror is only just "screwed in" (or however you want to call it).

So I had another try at the mirror - no luck. I was not able to turn the mirror, not even a tiny bit. Have I said that I am not well at the moment and I have not used full force. Tools would be a no no anyway.

What I managed was to separate the mirror from the VW mirror holder. That was easier. Just to take out a "spring ring".

Now I checked if the Garmin holder will fit onto the remains of the VW mirror holder. The Garmin holder is a wee bit to big, but with a bit of rubber from a bike tube it fits rather well. Now my dashboard looks like this:

The adapters which I got worked well. VW installed a power cable for the Nextbase Dashcam. So I had Mini USB power cable at the top of the windscreen. The first adapter female-mini USB to 2x male-mini USBs. One of them I connected into the Nextbase Dashcam, die other I connected to the 2nd adapter female-mini USB to USB-C.

I started the engine and both device receive power and work well. Switching the power off both devices lose power (exactly as I wanted).

So that worked well.

Software connection

What I mean is to Bluetooth connection between the Garmin Camper and the VW radio unit. It seems they "see each other" but they won't connect. Here I might push it a bit, because both devices were not designed for this kind of usage. But for me it is important (this still can be a deal breaker for me). The sound from the Garmin is bad. Driving along, listing to music (not loud) it is possible to overhear the Garmin.

I have to spend more time with this one.

Software usage

Like many others I got to be used to Google maps. In general it worked well. Using the Garmin device means to change the workflow (help - change!).

Using Park4Night, finding a spot and "hand over" the coordinates worked in my tests:

1.) Park4Night - 2.) Garmin Drive - 3.) Garmin Device

It supposed to be possible to "share" destinations from Google Maps to Garmin Drive, but this morning all my tests failed. There is an error message: No location information found in the link provided.

That is a wee bit annoying. I need to look into this more. I think it is extremely handy to use the Google Maps power to find something, hand it over to Garmin Drive and then to Garmin Camper to calculate the rout based on the campers size. This is not working.

What I have not tested at all, how to create a longer tour (up to 9x or more stops) preferably on the PC and send the saved tour to the Garmin device.

So, that is where I am at the moment. If somebody came across some solutions listed above please let me know. My plan is to test the Garmin Camper 795 for about 2x weeks. If it is ok, I will keep it and if it won't meet our needs it will go back to Garmin and I get my money back. The cost for the entire test was only for the 2x adapters.

Eberhard

Just a short update.

I decided to send the Garmin Camper 795 back.

The physical installation at the VW mirror holder was actually not bad. Also to get the power from the dashcam worked.

I decided to send the sat nav back because of these reasons:
  • Even though I was reading it on several web pages, the Camper 795 does not support the Irish Eircode
  • I failed to connect the sat nav to the camper radio. The sound output of the Garmin device is not that good. I see issues here
  • Using the Garmin Drive app with Google maps didn't work on my phone. To use the powerful Google maps search functions and "hand over" the information to the Garmin device did not work (which should have)
  • I was hoping that the Garmin sat nav maps would have been clearer than Google maps. But my tests showed otherwise
Because of this I thought it was not worth to spend EUR 440.00. So it went back this morning.

We will continue to use Google maps for the foreseeable future. If Sygic finally manages to get the Camper app Android Auto compatible I will give it a try with this solution.

Eberhard
