Roof mattress options + advice please

Hi all,

Having spent a few nights away and using the upstairs bed as our prime sleeping zone, we have found the standard issued VW mattress somewhat firm. Reviewing the various threads we are a little unsure what to go for:

Option A) 2" Comfortz with the Zonesleep topper
or
Option B) 1" Comfortz with the Zonesleep topper.

Initially we thought the 2" combo would be great but understanding from the threads that you cannot close the roof with this set up is pushing us to edge to the 1" combo. We can then leave them in situ.

We looked at the various posts, but could not find any that related to the two combinations together so,before we splash out our cash on either of these we wondered if any members use either of the combinations up top? If so any feedback on sleep experience, comfort etc would be very much appreciated.

Plus 1 for Option B. Comfortable and great to be able to leave the Zonesleep in the roof when closed.

Shane you cant make COTF, its is the best thing ever for trying stuff out and speaking to other owners. it is amazing how much information you can gain from a weekend.

I wonder if I can just ask a question to check I understand the suggestion here - is option B to go for one of these:

...with one of these on top:

???

Does that mean that I could leave these two items in situ whilst I close the roof and the roof won't get damaged? I guess I would need to take out the standard factory fitted mattress?

And would I be able to get something similar for the lower bed? I can see ads for this one here:

...but am not sure if that is for the California SE?

Hi Jerome - we've got the one inch Comfortz mattress upstairs, combined with the Zonesleep which you can definitely leave in place with the roof closed. We love the Zonesleep so replacing the original two inch with Nick's slimmer version saved all the hassle of having to remove the Zonesleep every time we moved.
We rarely sleep downstairs but have the upgraded VW Comfort mattress which we have used without a Zonesleep.

Can I ask about this too. Zonesleep say their topper cannot be left in situ with the roof down?
I recently added a 1" memory foam to the original mattress but it's too high to be left in place.
To sum up you are saying a Comortz 1" memory foam and a zone sleep topper can stay in the roof permanently?

FWIW, we've now spent a few nights up top on the standard bed and down below on the VW comfort. They are both very firm and could do with a little softening. We like the option of sleeping both up and down according to conditions, so we need a cheap and effective solution. My conclusion is to make a ZS that stores on the shelf and can be used for either bed. I will deal with the size difference when my designing hat goes on.

Having to replace the original top mattress just so you can leave the zonesleep in place seems silly. Those sleeping downstairs will still have to store their zonesleep topper on the shelf in any case. And if you change your mind about which bed to use, you'll waste even more money.
Has anyone tried to close the top on a zonesleep with the original mattress in place? They are thin, soft and compress somewhat, don't they?

Why VW can't simply make a straight sided double sided mattress pad that is tested to be comfortable for most people is beyond me, but it certainly keeps the after-market business buoyant.

All the advice from VW and Zonesleep is that you should not risk closing the roof on the Zonesleep combined with the original mattress.
There are just the two of us and we have always slept upstairs during our trips to fourteen different countries (with just two exceptions in over two years due to storms). Being able to leave the Zonesleep upstairs in situ with Nick's one inch mattress has been perfect for us, much better than using just the original VW mattress or having to remove and store the Zonesleep. It wouldn't suit everyone but that doesn't mean it's silly. What would be silly would be to risk closing the roof on a Zonesleep on top of the original mattress.

Hi all,

As it was I who posted this original query, thought I would post quick update.
I can now confirm we have opted for option B. This equates to a zonesleep topper on to Nicks 1" replacement roof mattress. Feedback to date, is the mattress and topper feel good together. Our real test will come in September when we plan 2 weeks away. I will up date accordingly.

I now have a VW roof mattress available if anyone wants to make me an offer. ;0).

Has anyone tried the Duvalay? Have seen them demonstrated, has a memory foam mattress and duvet combined in a kind of sleeping bag arrangement. They have different thickness mattresses and tog ratings available. Not cheap, the wife wants one, would be interested if anyone has any experience of them.

We had Duvalays and sent them back ( but others do like them); see if you can pull up another thread when this has been discussed.

We had two duvalays but ended up putting them on fleabay after just two outings.

Very bulky and they use memory foam which can make you very hot and sweaty especially in high temperatures . A lot of money for what they are.

I think they are great and used one every night sleeping up top for 15 months....however I think that they would be VERY impractical to use side by side if two were sleeping on the same bed. When there are two of us sharing the top bed we revert to bottom sheet and duvet....
