Recently my 2012 Ocean has stated having roof problems. First the little van/roof symbol started flashing but the roof worked.

Now I have the roof symbol and fault notification and the roof doesn't work, with the annoying roof alarm . The roof is down (no gaps) and I assume secure.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Check the Control Panel Diagnostic menu.

Check Control Panel Diagnostics.

Control Panel Off and wait 30 secs

Control Panel On

Press and Hold R lower button and then press Control Knob for 5 secs.

New Hidden Menu . Scroll to VW Diagnostics.

If there are any codes shown, take note and then Reset/Clear.

Return to Main Menu.

Switch Off Control Panel using L lower button. Wait 30 secs and Switch On.

Try Roof/Heater or Fridge

I found the diagnose.
Tried to erase/reset/clear by pressing contre button for 5 + seconds. Then the return button for a number of seconds. No luck.
Ended up with Error code 1000, which seems to be standard error code.
If I press the I/O button I get the message; Roof Open, which it isn't.
I can't turn off the control panel

Yup 1000 usually means sensors. Also the control panel not switching off is because it thinks the roof is open.

If you read the various threads there is a company that will fix it in Cornwall I think. If you want to burn money, take it to a dealer. Or...

I don't mind mechanicals, but electricals are not my Bag.

Maybe I will have to burn some money - depending on cost.

Not a bad time of year for it to happen. And for some the roof sticks open or closed. Its a lot easier to fix b4 that happens.

Thanks again.

I have approached my local VW dealer for a quote, if it is silly, I may have to give it a go.

Think £1000+ with VW.
Think £100- (including a couple of tools) DIY.
Its tempting to say the least I have two mechanic sons, one is busy and one is lazy.

We have all the tools though.

How do you open the roof, with no motor etc?

You remove the Control Panel and disconnect. There is a 2 pin plug attached to the motor. You apply 12v + to one of the wires. One wire is for UP the other for Down. You just need 1 wire from the engine or Leisure battery +tve with, if you wish , an in-line 30 amp fuse.

You don't need a -tve wire as the hydraulic pump and batteries are all grounded to the Chassis.

Thank you what is +tve wire?

I've printed out your full description and pic - that took a long time as I was inable to copy the text and pics in one go, so had to do it one by one.

I am off to look for the sensors now.

Thank you.

I would happily convert the roof to manual. I've always worried about the electric roof and now, for good reason.

Has anyone done this, I wonder?

We had the same with our 2008 model and I thought it was the roof sensors from what I'd read, but it turned out to be the infamous earth shunt issue. I thought we had a whole bunch of different intermittent electrical issues around the van when we bought it, and was worried we'd bought a money pit. But since sorting the earth shunt, they all seem to have gone away, including the roof problem.

Thanks for that. Now I have another potential area to look at.

What is an earth shunt?

Red, positive wire.

Sorry I hadn't noticed your roof was stuck shut. Yes that does add a bit more pain.
The sensors swap is pretty easy. As long as you follow instructions its cutting wires and attaching new ones. The sensors themselves are a wee bit fiddly to squeeze in but all mentioned. I didn't even solder or use connectors just twisted wires together after watching Youtube videos and smothered in tape.

Thank you.

I have booked it into a garage (they specialise in German vehicles and vans etc) for a diagnosis. After that, and depending on costs etc, I will decide what to do.

I believe the motor actually needs positive and negative connections on the two pin connector.

Reversing the +/- feeds drives the pump in the other direction.

In a past post I think the Poster used just 1 wire. Can’t find it now. You might be correct.
