Roof Problems

It’s also possible to raise the roof by unscrewing the emergency lower screw, and then just simply lift the roof up from the inside by pushing up. It’s heavy, two person job and two wood beams approximately 1m should be placed at the sides to support the roof and holding it up…

Thank you.

I have booked it into a garage (they specialise in German vehicles and vans etc) for a diagnosis. After that, and depending on costs etc, I will decide what to do.
Some have ordered the sensors online and then got an auto-electrician to do the work.

Yup 1000 usually means sensors. Also the control panel not switching off is because it thinks the roof is open.

If you read the various threads there is a company that will fix it in Cornwall I think. If you want to burn money, take it to a dealer. Or...

Subsequent messing after a bit of messing about by a local garage (who claim to specialise in German Vehicles), the error codes are now 2001 and 1000. Went in with one fault, came out with two.

I have just been quoted £2166.00 to fix the roof.

2001 is a heater fault code, normally caused by the control panel wiring being unplugged and plugged in the wrong order. The 2001 fault should clear by resetting the panel.

In terms of doing the roof sensors yourself, I would recommend you do it for the money saved - Also the bit that often gets overlooked is the fact the VW dealer will replace the whole harness and this will mean all the sealing of the harness will have to be undone and re-done, with all the risks that come with that. Replacing the sensors is actually the least disruption to the whole vehicle.

If you follow the instructions that @Lambeth Cali put together and just mark the cables before cutting them it is only 8 wires and 8 joints. There is endless support from the forum and there is nothing scary. A bit of pre-planning, order bits, practice joining wires (lots of options; crimped barrels, soldering, butt splices) and insulating tape or heat shrink (ideally).

The awkward part is getting the roof up if it won't open and you have to put power directly on the pump, again not a big challenge, just some wire and careful planning.

- However please get other views from the forum, what I perceive as easy because of my experience is not necessarily a fair view. @WelshGas @Lambeth Cali thoughts ?

Spot on

And thank you.

I have decided to give it a go. My son works for BMW so can order the parts. Although he is motorcycles he knows all the car mechanics and I may call upon one to help, if I get stuck. I have printed out Lambeth Cali info and pics.

I just need to figure out how to raise the roof so I can get to work. Has anyone done an illustrated version of how to do it?

Have you or anyone on the forum posted an illustration of how to raise the roof, when the sensors have packed up?

Some stuff here.

Sorry I didn’t have to do that. Mine still worked.

There are 2 ways. Manually turning a screw or putting a current across the motor. Both require cutting some foam I think to get access.

Your roof still worked but you changed the senors?

Why was that?

I'm glad you did though because, using your info I am about to embark on that job.

SMG Cowfold quoted £2166 to do it (complete new wiring loom etc,).

Where is the emergency lower screw? Is it the one behind the control panel?

Yes I think so. If you have a manual, I think it’s mentioned in there.

My control panel was showing it up when down and I wasn’t sure it was locking down properly. Finally I replaced the control panel for a new one as the lcd display was useless and this new one made a bonging sound constantly when it thought the roof was open.

That’s when I replaced the sensors.

ONE WORD OF WARNING - don’t do during bad weather. Once you’ve started you can’t put the roof down until it’s finished.

@Anthony1 try this leaflet it might help along with @Lambeth Cali instructions (which I used to replace my sensors).

In a past post I think the Poster used just 1 wire. Can’t find it now. You might be correct.
Think this may help

Post in thread 'Hydraulic roof pump repair'

The last image in post #6 shows the connector block with two wires attached to direct power the pump. Also shows battery direct connection and decent size of cable to get a 30amp supply direct to the connector
If roof doesn’t raise but pump runs just swap connections over.

As above.
This is how you remove the Control Panel only.

To reset the Control Panel.

For those of you who don't know, if you ever get any problems with roof stuck or any other error say with the heater or fridge, you are able to access the hidden menu in your control panel as used by the VW Engineers.

Access as follows:

1. Hold down the centre of the rotary button together with the menu button (button below with the squares on it)

2. You will get the hidden menu.

3. Rotate the rotary button to get to "VW diagnose" and select this by pressing on the centre of the rotary button.

4. If no errors are present it will display "no errors"

5. If Errors are present then a list of errors will appear

6. Press the centre of the rotary button again to delete all the errors

7. Repeat process above just to check that errors have dissapeared!

8. Re-configure the time and date if neccesary.

Any problems should be resolved assuming these are Electronic and not Mechanical.

Error Codes from Control Panel.

1 = 1 = Pop-up roof

2 = 2 = Plumbing Heating

3 = 3 = Cool box Cooler

6. Press the centre of the rotary button again to delete all the errors

Sadly this process doesn't work for me. I press the centre button and it just goes back to VW Diagnose. Errors remain.

My new concern, other than my roof, is the diesel heater no longer works. Error 2001. Thanks to my local garage, ie, it went in with one error 1000 and came out with two, 1000 and 2001.

Thank you.

I had a similar fault code and a flashing heater icon after my T6 had been in for an extended period to a VW van centre (14 days for a number of repairs and possibly a starter battery disconnect.)

This procedure worked to reset the heater and no fault code.

“Press the L hand bottom button. This switches OFF the panel. Wait 30 secs and switch on using same button. This restarts the Control Panel.”
