We've just spent two nights at Royal Hill Camp Site, which is located adjacent to the River Severn in the middle of the triangle made by drawing a line from Oswestry at the north down to Shrewsbury in the south east and Welshpool in the south west.
The site incorporates the Royal Hill Inn, which serves good beer and food at reasonable prices; the service is good and so quick that I was only able to drink half a pint before it arrived!

The site is made up of four fields. Behind the pub, there is one which is mostly statics, another next to it is tourers which are there permanently; and at the side of the pub adjacent to the road is the touring field with electric hook ups and hard standing. We stayed in the field on the opposite side of the road next to the river, there are no hook ups here and it is less regimented; ideal for California folk. Come to think of it, a good place for a meet!
There is actually a footpath across the river here but you will need your swimming cozzies on!
The area is very quiet and mostly narrow lanes with passing places (if you're lucky!). The only problem (for us anyway) is it that takes a long time to walk anywhere and although there are many footpaths on the OS map (including the Severn Way) many of them are underused, overgrown and poorly signed. We attempted to walk to Rodney's Pillar on the mountain range nearby but unfortunately Margaret couldn't make it (due to having had foot surgery recently) and we turned back just after the Bailey Bridge near Crew Green.
Rodney's Pillar is atop the mountain on the right. About 5 - 6 miles from the site.
These lanes are, however, ideal for cycling and next time we go so do the bikes.
Cost for camping was £14 per night, or £18 with hook up. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
