Running out of gas - what do you do?

There is a (now very rare) 901 cylinder, which is much smaller but we carry as a spare all the time. The three standard sizes are compared :

Larger Gaz refillable butane cylinders come in three sizes.
901 cylinder contains 0.454 kilograms (1.00 lb) of gas in a 161 mm (6.3 in) high cylinder with a 110 mm (4.3 in) diameter
904 contains 1.81 kg (4.0 lb) in a 188 mm (7.4 in) high cylinder with a 202 mm (8.0 in) diameter,
907 (the largest commonly used size) contains 2.72 kg (6.0 lb) in a 250 mm (9.8 in) high cylinder with a 202 mm (8.0 in) diameter.

Even in a packed van there's usually room for a 901....

So we've had our California for around 5 years so we're used to the gas running out. It's never really too hard to find a place to buy a replacement canister but recently we found ourselves in a remote part of Scotland with no mobile signal and no gas. Which got me wondering what other people do - is there a way to monitor the amount remaining or maybe evenn carry a small spare? Any ideas welcome! Thanks.
Hi we have never used our gas for this reason .we have an inverted built into our Cali . Boils the kettle. Works the toaster and microwave and now we have added a George foreman .we only use if not connected to power . We run the engine to help the power . We have it built in to the bottom press under the sink . Bought the gas put it in and never turned it on and not going to . Just our way of doing things .using the compartment as a tool box for odds and bits and pieces .

901 fits in the side pocket of the Cadac safari, which is sort of neat, and what we use

We used to have a 904 but failed to get a refill in Spain and eventually gave up and it got swapped for a 907 at a ferretera outside Granada.
