Rusting Roof Bolts

If you're got a Kylie bike rack, have you looked at the strap clips ! We've had ours changed under warranty. Rust and corrosion is a VW no cost option

If only it was an "option" seems corrosion comes as part of the spec!
Mind you I wouldn't put it past 'em to offer a corrosion free option at a premium.

Update. All done on warranty. The full set of bolts replaced and fitting by the people out at Havant. A small amount of grease on each top. Well done to Breeze.

I have already put on some new original ones. They are good now for another 5 years left. (Changed them about 2 years ago).
Hi TripleBee,
A quick question on the roof bolt removal.
I want to swap out a couple because of rust. Is there a nut that will drop off the other end or is it just a straight forward unscrew and replace?

Cheers

Can you point out what bolt you will be replacing?

I don't post very often but I just wanted to find out if anyone has got this problem.

My van is a 2016 Ocean and has just been in for the roof recall and I'm waiting on a response. After looking I saw that three of the bolts holding the lifting mechanism to have surface rust. I wrote to customer services with pictures and they returned saying that "it didn't effect performance" so it wouldn't be covered on warranty.

Has anyone seen this issue? Has your local VW garage sorted it?

Thanks for any help.View attachment 44353View attachment 44355View attachment 44354
I´m stil new in this forum (else in the german Caliboard).
Found this contribution about roof bolts. Mine looked exactly like this.

I can report of the repair of our T5.1 with hydraulic roof (end of 2021)
The entire roof was dismounted at the VW comm. car garage in Hannover.

Enclosed you´ll find a fotograph of some of the dismounted bolts/ screws, which I took at VW during repair.
Originally we had a problems with a water leak near the B-pillar/ sliding door (which is in our case on the right side).

Findings: many threads of the dismounted bolts were rusty (photo).

All bolts were replaced by original new ones. As far as I know: because of the higher forces caused by the hydraulic: they are high-strenght ones and are galvanized (part-#s of the bolts are shown in erWin and on my pro-forma invoice). The supporting frame of the hydraulic joint was newly sealed.

To avoid future corrosion of (specially on top of) the bolts the mechanic followed the working instruction: he sealed the top of all bolts with an elastic sealant - so he explained to me.
