Short chain between the top of the jack to the car.
Long chain from the jaw to your ankering point.
Short chain from the bottom of the jack to the long chain when the jaw is at the top of the hilift jack.
So you can keep tension on the long chain when you lower the jaw again.
(This will save you a 25% of the lenght of your jack to get the chains on tension).
Be sure using chains en D rings what are strong enough for the weight.

Personaly I like chains because they are safer.
When they break they dont twist with a bang like a cable cutting you in slices along the way.
Secondly I don,t like the weight of a propper winch at the front.
The more weight in the front, the deeper goes your frontwheels in the sand
