Hi Team, we are planning a road trip (love a good road trip in the van!) setting off in late April for about 6 weeks. We have the relevant Rough Guides and of course there is plenty of stuff on the internet. However I thought I would ask if anyone here has more recent experience / advice etc (most of the previous posts are quite old now).

I would appreciate any advice or thoughts from all the adventurers out there!

Many thanks

Grahame

i guess with April, you'll need to check which mountain passes etc are likely to be open

i went down in September'13 taking in as many moutain passes as we could - all passes open so no problem. went Speyer - Prague - Tatra Mountains - Budapest - KrK then back up through Slovenia to Glossglockner, Stelvio, Luxembourg and back.

want to do it all again, and Norway and Corsica :)

We tend to get a bit side tracked sometimes and spend too long getting to where we want to be ...... so this trip we intend to 'speed there' via Germany and Austria so that we can spend more time at the destination.

As for Norway....... oh yes, defo a country we wish to return to! ........ just gotta get a few 'new ones' in first!

This years mantra...... 'go where we have never been before' (apart from the route there haha)

We went to Slovenia last September and loved it. Only managed a few days because the weather turned bad, otherwise we would have explored further south and possibly the coast. Stayed near Bled and explored various lakes and gorges and then moved up to the Austrian border near Jezersko.

I think the journey is a massive part of the holiday and in many ways we find it better than the destination!
We took weeks to get to Slovenia (via Germany & Austria) and then weeks to get back (via Croatia, Italy and France).
Take your time and enjoy :)

Slovenia is one of our favourite countries and we keep returning to the stunning places and friendly people. Some places we like to visit in the past:
- Coast: Piran
- Caves and castle: Pivka Jama and Predjama
- City and food: Lubljana
- MTB: Jamnica, Kranjska Gora and Maribor
- River and Mountains: Sobec Valley
- Wine and chill: Saksida Camping

That said we like Croatia too and would love to visit it in spring rather than in summer as we did.

On the other hand we like to stay on our way to Slovenia at the Faaker See (Anderwald Camping) right next to the border. In Germany around Füssen/Allgäu.

Slovenia is great although weather can be an issue early in season. We went in May and initially encountered a lot of rain . Would recommend Lake Bohinj rather than Bled . Lovely lakeside campsite . Also Piran on the coast .Further east Ptuj is very atmospheric and a bit off the beaten track .

Croatia is fantastic although we found campsites generally expensive ( but excellent quality) .

Our route :

Pula . Arena stoja campsite :fab
Ferry to Cres and onward to Mali Losinj.campsite Cikat . Busy but good.
Ferry to Zadar , busy Premium camping Zadar . Good city to visit .
Onwards to Split : camping Stobrec . Good with easy bus access to city .
Plitvice Lakes. Wonderful / a must see . Korana Campsite lovely with good bus access to lakes.

We didn’t go down as far as Dubrovnik having heard how busy it can be in summer but not sure if this was the right call!

Anyhow, all the ingredients are there for a great trip. It certainly was one of our best,

Enjoy!

Not had a van trip there but would recommend Kranjska Gora for all round outdoor activities. It’s a lovely alpine village.
Ljubljana well worth a visit, the Saturday morning market by Dragons Bridge is a great place to people watch from a cafe.
Slovenian wine is excellent, try as much of it as you can. The people are friendly and English is quite widely spoken.

Tisno is lovely , in Croatia has a good car park for overnight stops by the CocoLoco beach bar .

Lake Bohinj is stunning, great water side campsite and Rovinj in Croatia, great campsites South of the old town, easy cycle into town.

Thanks team, a good few ideas there to be getting on with! We are thinking down through Germany.... a week or two in Slovenia...... into Croatia for a week or two...... then spend more time in which ever one we prefer! (I have a feeling that could well be Slovenia, which came as a surprise......) :)

I visited Slovenia and Austria in Sept last year. No wild camping allowed and the better sites get booked up quickly, even when the schools are in. Best to plan ahead and make reservations. Some sites like to pack you in like sardines which I found less tha ideal.
Ljubljana was a super little city. Very easy to explore on a bicycle.
