Hi,
I've had the joy of another spare wheel stolen by some git last week and was wondering if anyone had any advice for the future.
It had a locking nut on and looks like it was cut off.
1) can you buy a bigger lock?
2) will the tyre repair foam work instead of a spare?
3) what size wheel and true size are the spares as I can't check now? I have 17inch alloys.

Thanks again for all the help on this forum.

Look up the thread on here called "spare wheel stolen at Lego Land" and within there you will find reference to an anti theft device for the spare wheel mate ;-) I got one it's a really effective deterrent and nice bit of kit

Thanks for the help but can't find that thread at all.
Can you remember the name of the lock!

HI,

I bought 4 17" steel wheels for my snow tyres when I got the van, VW Part No is 7E0601027B091. (2014 180 Cali.)

If you need a 17inch steel wheel try calling AB Crush in kent, they do all the Sportline customisations for VW & should have the steels they take off.

I have a spare safe on mine & a bike lock on the front of the carrier.

I work for the company that makes the sparewheel locks. please call us on 01455 610854 to order one ask for Dave

Hi There, Are you still offering the VIP discount on them please?

I bought mine last month and discount given. When you buy make sure you have the security bolt that fits for the alloy wheel (even if you have a steel wheel as the spare) as the extra length is needed to fit the device.

Some scumbag stole ours on Saturday night whilst at a pub in Cumbria, they also took the wheel from a transporter that was in the car park also. Anyone know where I can get a cheap spare wheel please?

If you are on facebook, join the VW T5 Forum, lots of people swapping and selling wheels on there, seen several posts in the last week re stolen spares.

Tp prevent lowlife stealing a new spare tyre it might be a good idea to just have an old part worn tyre under the van instead. Still ideal for emergencies and to get you home.

The issue comes up from time to time. what I have done and posted before.
  • As above fitted get you home just legal spare tyre.
  • Fitted spare safe
  • plenty of WD40 over the spare lock etc may get finger prints over my white van.
  • I try to reverse park up against hedge wall or over curb stones etc to make in difficult
I have thought that when I have the spare off to paint my registration number on the side walls of my get you home spare.

Can you get hi vis spray paint suitable for a tyre. Having a fluorescent spare wheel might put the scumbags off taking yours.:thumb

The trouble is ---where do you stop adding accessories to the Cali for security.
Deadlocks, steering wheel locks, foot pedal locks, dash cameras...... and now spare wheel locks !!
As Larrylamb states in his post the spare wheel just needs to safe and legal on a basic steel rim.
The chances are that any damaged tyre is on an alloy and will be replaced at the earliest opportunity.
The spare is therefore only going to used until the time the damaged tyre is replaced and then the spare will be put back under the van.
I would suggest that if you have a brand new tyre fitted have it removed and store it till its needed
and have a decent but barely legal part worn fitted as the spare.
The AA have shown stats that show how seldom the spare tyre is ever used. Can't remember when I last had a puncture or tyre damage ( now if that's not tempting fate !!!! ).

Also how many people will actually be able to change a wheel in less than perfect conditions-----,at night, in the rain ,on a road camber with the VW provided jack/tools. The T5 is a hell of heavy vehicle and the wheels are very heavy. Most people will call their breakdown services.

Just my take on things.

I agree, in your home country!
I'm still searching, but a fluorescent Orange or Lime Green Spare tyre will not have a very high re-sale value, if any.:thumb

I agree but as its on the outside its the most vulnerable and a priority to protect for me. I have the sparesafe and so far its still there after 7 months. ;) Is getting a barely legal spare that's unattractive to thieves, really that easy to do? By the time you've gone to all that hassle you could have just installed a spare safe?

If you look at the cost of a steel wheel with tyre its over £200, you can see why they are taken.

Making them unattractive, day glow or in my case smart water stickers, certainly can't hurt

Lime green - orange-pink. It's still gone ! And no spare.

They are stolen for a reason. Steel wheel with new tyre. Somehow I think they would prefer a nice silver wheel with a black tyre on, rather than a Day-Glo Orange version.
Yes, if you were the only vehicle around then they might take your Day-Glo wheel, But if there are others around I would bet they would leave yours alone.:thumb

Most of these will be stolen at night, how will the thief know it has been painted? By the time they have snapped the bolt and removed it ( the damage has been done) they will be so p**sed off they will throw the wheel in the canal and run a key down the side of your van !!
