hi. New to all of this, just buying a used Cali Ocean 19 plate. Need some advice. Its got factory fit 18" wheels but no spare. Been told that from the factory any vehicle with 18" only come with inflation kit. Its not got the spare carrier underneath. I can get the bits to fit the carrier but what size spare wheel can I use, does anyone know if the wheel well will take an 18" wheel or a 17" wheel with a tyre with larger side wall to match the same diameter of the 18".

When I was "new to all this" a couple of year ago, the best tip I had was to take out a VIP membership so I could use time defined (to my vehicle age for example) advanced searches on my questions, which had often been previously answered. I cannot answer your specific question but I can recall several posters have before.

I have Wolfrace 8.5 x 18 alloys with Falken 235/55R18, and the spare is the same size. Fits in my T6.1 Coast carrier (although it’s heavy and a challenge to get out, especially with a tow hook in the way).

The carrier is easy to fit, there is a bit of foam for the hinge pin at stupid money, use a bit of an old camping mat instead.

Remember you will also need a jack as no original spare, no jack. Buy a 5t bottle jack instead.

We have 18" fitted when purchased van. Have a 17" spare underneath in cradle - everything measures same circumference - think if front tyre goes then it will mean swapping rear original onto front and spare on rear.

My cali had 18" wheel option with no spare but I still got a jack in the kit.

Oh, I checked a few vans without a spare and none had a jack, maybe In uk you get a jack.

Have had 3 vans with 18 inch wheels - first came with a jack, last 2 didn’t. Raised it with both (different) dealers, both said they are deleted along with spare. You could probably push it as the standard spec doesn’t say it’s deleted but not worth arguing the toss over. £60 on eBay fixed it.
Not sure why you would buy a bottle jack instead of the OEM pantograph one - the original is fine and importantly fits in the tool box behind the seat so easy to carry.
Cradle can easily be found on eBay too, just be careful that it comes with the bolts, pin and spacers - they are quite expensive if bought separately. 10 mins to fit.
17 inch for the spare if it’s an Ocean, 215 or 235 tyre. I haven’t tried a 18 inch spare but had understood they wouldn’t fit. Post #3 indicates otherwise but note that their spare is narrower than a standard size 18 inch tyre, may well be the difference.

I need to get a spare wheel and was wondering if I could use a steel wheel with the existing wheel bolts. Just concerned they may be too long with the thinner wheel and foul on something inside the hub.

If you’ve got genuine VW alloys and get a genuine VW steel spare the bolts will be fine.

No problem as long as alloys and steel wheel are VW.
On my vehicle, 17" VW alloys , the spare provided was a 17" steel all from VW. Same bolts.
3rd party wheels can require different bolts.
