Starlink - Global internet

A real world example. I’m parked up faced directly West with the Starlink mini flat on my roof and not aligned. There are a few trees in front of me but otherwise a clear view of the sky. I’ve been parked up for 3 hours so have a good lock on satellites. I’m getting better speeds that my fibre internet at home.

Impressive. Remind us again which plan you have?

I get similar speeds all the time. Love it! We’ve been getting some hail lately so I decided to order a “Dishy Shield”. It’s a polyurethane cover that doesn’t affect signal but protects against hail, branches, etc.

Made by Australians who mount and drive around in the bush. But also means it shipped from Australia so won’t have it for a week or so.

I got about the same under almost similar circumstances (Starlink not flat on roof but tilt on bonnet).

However, my internet at home is a lot faster, more than twice as fast.

I’m on the roaming unlimited. Currently shy under 90€ per month. That’s almost 10€ more than my home internet.

Yeah, no way I can beat home fiber.

I went for a silicone shield. Less protective but also a lot cheaper.

Why is the upload speed so much slower? I can get much faster with a 4G router.

The main advantage of Starlink is in remote areas where 4G/5G isn’t available, or at festivals when everyone and their mother is using the same mobile tower and speeds drop.

Another advantage is that you can pause your subscription, which is something you can’t do with 4G/5G or your home internet (at least not here in The Netherlands).

Yes! And also for roaming internationally. At least with my uber Maximus international subscription for 5G I get max 40GB roaming data.

Yes I can see that is an advantage, although with a 4G router I could use a more powerful directional antenna to point to a mast that isn’t being used so heavily.
You have to ask Elon Musk…
I’d rather not… I presume that’s just the way it is.. Fast download and adequate upload.

I only pay £14 per month for unlimited 5G so would need to pause for 6 months for this saving to be of benefit.

Yes, that’s handy. When I travel to Spain though I can buy a 240gb data sim for €15.

I guess the real advantage is the fact that you are guaranteed a decent level of coverage wherever you are. For me, it is not worth the cost for my usage and I can make do with 5G, although when I work remotely I just need to make sure I’m in an area with a signal!

Sounds like you’ve got it covered for your needs! That’s great. However some of us go way out into the boondocks where mobile signal isn’t available. This is where Starlink shines. Wild camping in the middle of nowhere.

Exactly and with my Odido (former T-Mobile) 5G, I think I get 20GB per day for roaming internationally, but that doesn’t include non-EU countries, like Switzerland.

I pay 35€ per month for it, but it’s one sim only in my iPhone. When using that as a hotspot with multiple devices, the iPhone just can’t keep up with battery life even when on a charger, due to it getting hot and refusing to charge.

I installed a Teltonika RUTC50 in my van. Have a second sim from my main mobile plan for 5 CHF, and Starlink. I have Starlink with a switch so when I turn it on the router fails over to that WAN connection as priority. Works very well!

Hmm.. you said before you can pause Starlink subscription. Does that mean you can just pay for one month while abroad for example and then pause it for say 4 months?

Well, even in the middle of the Eifel in Germany you would need it sometimes. There are places where you are lucky to get 3G on mobile.

But indeed, it’s whatever suits your needs. I only got my Starlink some weeks ago and tried it out last week in Germany just to get a feeling of it. So far I like it, even though the areas I was in would have worked with 4G/5G as well in most cases, apart from the potential overheating of the iPhone.

Yes, I do this all the time. Typically enable for 2-3 months in summer while traveling and then pause for the rest of the year. Unpause if the need arises.

Yes, you can pause it for 4 months, or downsize to a cheaper version with less data.

Sorry for the picture being in Dutch, but I think you may get the point. I can pause completely (button at the bottom) or choose a different subscription.
