HI

After a long hard look around (there are several Cali's of the right money) I found one that is a June 2014 180 SE manual 4motion with 48k on clock. It has full VW service and 1 previous owner.

I asked about what EGR cooler suffix letter it had and owner (who is aware of the issues) said there is no suffix letter!!!! Puzzling as I thought it would possibly be a 'D' by then. They say it has full VW history and they have it booked in to have the cooler blanked just as a precaution.

Van appears in excellent condition with clear MOT's - what do you think as I'll be using some £27k of my savings on top of my T5 Camper sale figure..........

So how much is the actual price for the van? I’ve got a 2015 140 SE with 23000 miles and last week on WBAC it was £43500 and this week it’s £34000 not that I really take any notice of those figures I just wonder who make the figures up.

My December 2014 180, had the EGR valve changed 2 weeks after delivery due to an electrical fault. It has no suffix letter.
Now just shy of 100,000 miles. Oil consumption 250mls/20,000 miles.

£43k

That's interesting - same year and engine. So EGR no suffix and yet you'd have thought with all the issues it would be a 'D'.

If you believe that theory.
2010/2011 CFCA engines had a problem but thereafter, who knows.

No what I mean yours being 2014 having EGR replaced late 2014 is surprise as I thought after 2011 it would have been 'D' on all of this engine till newer T6

Exactly. According to the Facebook group. Lots of theories, not much in the way of incontrovertible evidence.

Now had message back from seller and it has actually got cooler with suffix 'A' dated 21 March 2014 so I'm assuming that's quite good as well after initial 2011 issues. Can't view though till July as owner works abroad

Hi Jim,

I don’t know where you saw the van advertised,

please be aware that there are lots & lots of scammers that will use every excuse so you can’t actually see the van. The I’m abroad at the moment is a classic scammers tactic.

They may ask for transfer of funds to a holding account etc, all designed to part you from your hard earned.
Some use photos from legitimate advertising including use of reg number etc.

I had an advert for my previous van , advertised on auto trader, cloned and the scammers details added, auto trader took the add down only after I reported it several times over a few week period.

Be aware scams are real and you should do your own extensive research , including physically seeing and driving the van & v5, mot & tax history (checking the V5 details very carefully vs the current owner details and address). v5 fraud is real
Transfer money to UK bank account only, and agree it with your bank prior to the exchange

There are lots of stories about people being scammed out of money only to find the vehicle does not materialise and the seller cannot be traced.

I’m sure your aware of the above and will carry out your due diligence but just wanted to post a cautionary warning

Thanks for the heads up. The person has been very up front with answers to specific questions only they would be able to answer. I would never part with a penny till I'd seen (at registered address - with proof via utility bill) and driven it.

All so far seems legit and he's even talked about a few other things and being nervous when he purchased it 3 years ago. I'm able to talk to him abroad on landline as well.

Thanks for concerns

£43k for a 2014 is a lot. However these are exceptional times.

Thought I did well getting £40k for my 2014!

There's one in the classifieds 2013 up for £45+!

In addition to usual checks (MOT History, Service history).

- Carry out an HPI check for outstanding finance.
- Cross check sellers name & address on below.
- View the van at the sellers address. Also, Google / streetview before you go and see if what is is parked outside (ie - does it look they are trading cars/vans). If they are a trader they wont be mentioned as the current owner on the V5.
- Check all 4 x tyres are a matching brand. If they are not its likely that seller has skimped on other items that you can't see,+ 4 motion needs matching tyres.
- Call the garages mentioned on the service history to ensure that they are valid.

....The other thing to remember is that it is more than likely a genuine honest sale; so worth explaining to the buyer what/why you are checking. If they get funny just walk away! The seller should also be checking that you are a genuine buyer as they are about to hand you an expensive vehicle so should also be making sure that they are not being scammed.

Thanks for this and yes I am doing all these as I always have done on car purchase. Always gone to sellers address and checked V5 matches and even asked to look at drivers licence! Spoken to garages as well - thanks for the advice all appreciated.

Quite new to the forum so not sure how to private message, I have a very similar van I’m considering selling for a cheaper alternative. The original idea was for my wife to use it as her daily but with the value of the van she is to scared to use it so it’s ended up being parked up and only used for camping.
When I read you were getting rid of a less expensive van it made the cogs turn a bit.
To send a PM you need to be a VIP member. Vans for sale need to be advertised in the relevant section as well.

What's the situation with your EGR cooler? I can't PM you either as I'm not a VIP member!
It’s has an “a” the end, but from the research I did on the EGR coolers and speaking to a vw specialist I was satisfied that the risk was very minimal.

Thanks for that but I'll be honest I need to be 100% sure and as the mileage is quite low and I intend to keep for quite a while and use as my daily vehicle mileage will climb and issues seem to come in around the 50 to 60k mark. Anyway thank you for the info.
