Stolen Awning

Noticed this morning that my awning had been stolen off my Ocean parked on the drive. The dogs were barking Tues morning about 2am, looked through the window, but could see nothing, so presumed it was someone walking past that had disturbed them (lesson learnt the hard way). Looks like they just ripped it off. Did not notice it missing yesterday (need to go to Specsavers). Anybody got any suggestion to stop it happening again, as well has not ignoring dogs barking. Am I better fitting a cheaper version or go through the insurance. VW want £980 + fitting.

How awful! You’re not claiming on your insurance?

Yes, its going through Comfort Insurance. Was wondering how I can stop it happening again. There is a scratch on the roof that will need sorting.

Sorry to hear this - what a shocker, I’d be so angry. Maybe a motion activated security light on your drive would be a deterrent, or if that would annoy your neighbours (animals setting it off etc) then perhaps wire the motion sensor to a light or audible signal inside your house?

Ba$tards! There is a significant amount of force required to do that. I’m not sure they knew what they were doing either, as they have damaged the awning while removing it as they have just pulled the securing bolt through the awning housing. This would require some long levers. You mention a scratch. Is there no other damage to your van?

Cannot see anything other than the scratches. Nothing looks out of shape.

There a few scratches on the roof and rail that needs sorting. So probably go through insurance, but will check how much it effects my renewal due in Sept
£799 -5%, does that include delivery?

As @Wiggly Woo says, just mentioning the fact to your insurance will probably effect your premium even if you don’t claim. If you haven’t already told them it might be better to just bite the bullet and DIY.

If you’ve queried about it they will log it anyway and it will be classed as a claim no matter what you do
Some companies do while others don’t. I started a claim with Direct Line but cancelled it before they sent an anyone out to look at the damage and they didn’t treat it as a claim.

Phone and ask: you’re only 70 miles away from them anyway across the peaks and I think they do fitting. Just get a local mobile scratch and fix firm out for your roof. It’ll be a 5 year claim around your neck on all cars otherwise.

I would check the central claims register, DL did that to me when my wife called them and simply asked a theoretical question ....

I called my insurance company once with a hypothetical question. Didnt give my name and he did answer my question and no record of a call.

I have been informed that because I have registered a claim it will still be in the system, even if I cancel the claim.
Worse still when I renew my policy, I will have to have a VTS tracker fitted. Which will include the initial cost + the annual subscription involved. I wish I had not put the claim in!!

What scum bags, what an awful thing to do..... As you say most likely wrecked the awning anyway by ripping out the bolts.
