Can I fit roof bars to this and are there any restrictions on weight?

Don't see why not, there's rails to fit bars, though I'm not sure what the weight limit is. You wouldn't want to much weight on there when you raise the roof.

That's what I was a little worried about. I would want to put a kayak and potentially surfboard on top

Had a sea kayak on the roof of my Beach today. Think the limit is 50kg which would cover a kayak and surfboard.
The kayak needs to come off before I would attempt to raise the roof. Might get away with a surfboard but nothing heavier.

My experience of the roof bars is yes indeed 50kg is the limit and you will not be able to raise the roof with anything loaded.

I found even with an empty box on the roof, my gas struts were a bit lazier and it sagged slightly.

You had no chance of putting the roof up with anything in the box.

Roof box... good idea or bad?

Good idea but it is full of bikes. Can both the VW bike rack and a Thule EasyBase be fitted on the back of a California at the same time?
