I am a bit of a belt and braces kind of person. After getting our 4 Motion (didn't work) stranded on the Yorkshire Moors at night in the freezing cold (a passing farmer resued us) I now carry sand mats and a tow rope (4 ton). I also carry - see pics. I also have breakdown cover. Am I being too cautious?

Having said that we had to fit a spare wheen in 30C heat in a Spanish sevice area a couple of weeks ago as our breakdown cover was not much help. Has anyone fitted a spare at the roadside. Luckily I carry a spare jack to lif the van to get the spare out of its cradle.

Changed two flat tires roadside by driving up on the kerb to create enough ground clearance to extract the spare. Only just doable on a 4Mo with 235 tires. Didn't bother replacing the spare back in the cage on one occasion. Think I'll leave it to roadside assist in future.

I do a bit of soft-roading in our 4Motion (sometimes not so soft) so I have an onboard compressor, battery starter, bottle jack, tow rope (and rated tow points), soft shackles, Maxtrax and tyre repair kit as well as the spare. I’ve used the Maxtrax a couple of times and they do multiple duty as leveller's and as a platform for the bottle jack. So far the rest of the recovery gear has only been used to help others - fingers crossed. in short I don’t think you’re being too conservative!

I carry this little kit:

plus wheel change, air compressor, Fuses, Lamps, Gas spanner (adjustable) in an Aldi toolbag.

Every time we go away anything I need whilst away is purchased and is put in and reassessed later.

SO currently Gorilla double sided tape, paracord, a leatherman (cheap china copy) with a hammer pliers and assorted blades including a saw, and a powerbank starter charger
