We are shortly to embark on a month tour of Southern Spain and bit of Portugal. We want to spend a few days exploring ‘big’ places like Seville, Cordoba etc yet find campsites outside of them and leave the van there and bus/taxi in as we have a 27kg Labrador. Has anyone had experience of going on public transport with a dog of that size as i understand there may be a weight limit.

Many thanks.

I can not be of much help regarding Spain but in Italy, generally a very dog friendly people, requirements will vary from place to place and mode of transport. Travelling with Weimaraners (about the same weight of your dog) around Europe we only have problems with muzzles, our dogs are not trained for it and will not accept it. So try to get him/her to accept a muzzle. For instance a Metro in Brescia, Italy was forgiving but tramway in Strasbourg, France was not. Good luck.

Sorry can’t help with Spain but we lived and worked in France for 14 years and have two Dalmatians about 25 kilos each. Generally no problem on both buses and trains but again we always had their muzzles attached to their collars just in case someone objected. Our dogs are muzzle trained as we often use Brittany Ferries who insist dogs are muzzled in public spaces even going from the van up to a cabin. We use the soft fabric ones which the dogs seem to prefer. Good luck …
