In that strange and foreign world of pipes, tubes and a big lump called an engine...

The only bit that I recognise apart from that big lump is the filler for the washers.

Next to it, to the right as you look at it, is a spherical shaped container that has pink liquid in it.

What is it and should it be full? Mine is only half full and I am wondering if I should top it up with something.

And...

yes, I have looked in the manual, but when I look in the "under the bonnet" section I get an attack of the vapours....

That will be your radiator expansion tank and it should have 2 lines on it Max & min
It should be in between the two defiantly not full as it has to let the water expand :thumb
Hope that makes sense :thumb

That is the Expansion tank for the radiator cooling system. When cold it should be about 1/2 full. There is a level mark on the side. The antifreeze should be at that mark when cold. Only use the recommended type and concentration for top-up.

Oh thank you.

I will check it tomorrow but it does look about half full on cold.

If it needs topping up I can ask someone.

Thank you, saves me appearing totally stupid - I think

Just pop in if you want us to double check for you Jenny :thumb

Pink Fluid is ANTIFREEZE normally mixed with water. The midway level is absolutely normal, as agreed with other Cali bloggers. And no, perfectly reasonable question to ask.

Half full is about perfect.

While you are in there you should check the oil as well apparently some of these VW engines can drink a bit of oil - it is just a lottery.

I do not do what I preach - my drive is on a slope so it gives a false reading, and when I have moved the van I can never be bothered :-(

You must be joking

I will end up with oil in the coolant, washer water in the oil and antifreeze in the wine ... oh, the Austrians have already thought of that one ...

Wow, I don't want to meet you on a dark night!!

To elaborate on that pic, I am a Dame-Officier in a French wine order that revives the Napoleonic Chevalier practice of removing the cork from a bottle of champagne with a swish of a sabre.

I hope you have the correct risk assessments and method statements in place!

Must be difficult to do within the confines of a Cali.

Makes my corkscrew look a bit tame.

No.

We count success or failure by the amount of drinkable wine left over :D
