Upper bed topper with roof lowered?

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone keeps a thin mattress topper on the upper bed with the roof closed?
Am considering putting a 2cm thick one up there, surely there's space for that, or is it really essential to remove it when lowering the roof?

The previouse owner of mine had one up there all the time, we dont use one find it ok without, but did try to close the roof with one single sleeping bag up there but the roof didnt shut properly.
