Our leisure battery beneath the front passenger seat became very hot last night - we turned everything off and unplugged the van and it OK this morning having taken say 2 hours to cool down - I’m gonna progressively switch everything back on this morning and monitor it - has anyone else experienced this problem and is there an explanation - there was no smell just heat! CheersGraham

No - it was late at night and we were already making a noise - what bearing does the other battery have?

They are wired in Parallel. Those are the 2 Leisure Batteries .If the one has failed it will have an effect on the other. Both have to be replaced if that is the case.

Thanks to all for the responses - we managed to get back home yesterday - the front battery very hot after the journey - rear battery no heat whatsoever - we will take in this week and post the results- sounds like the front battery is in trouble!

If yours is a 2017 Ocean, as your profile suggests, that’s quite soon to need a replacement battery

Sorry for jumping on the thread, Where did you get to with this? We are in the middle of France, and have the same issue, just tonight (after 7 weeks on the go) the battery under the front seat has got really hot whilst on hookup, leisure battery in the back by the fridge is fine.2013 SE by the way if that helps with the diagnosis.

Any update on this thread please. Mine has had the same issue after first use. Booked into the dealers Thursday 10th - could save a lot of time and hassle if I could point them in the right direction - rather than their stock answer "we need it for 24 hours to investigate".

Just to close this post down - we contacted our local VW dealer and the replaced the front leisure battery under the VW warranty - they couldn’t explain what (if anything) had created the fault - just that the battery had failed - it’s now OK

I contacted the local VW dealer - pointed them in the direct of failing batteries then questioned whether the leisure batteries had been charged according to the Hand Book (12hours per month on hook) for the 11 months that the vehicle had been either in VW's possession or the VW dealer's possession. They admitted they only keep tabs on the main battery not check the leisure batteries. Both batteries changed free of charge.

We had a similar problem but with the rear leisure battery under the wardrobe heating up. In our case, the VW dealer identified the problem as the battery charger and replaced this under warranty. Everything working as it should now.
