VW bike rack and vehicle height

Hi,

Does the VW bike rack add to the height of the vehicle or does it sit beneath??

without bikes on it sits beneath, dependant on your bikes, they can sit above when on the rack

An empty rack does not add to the height, but you will exceed the vehicle height once you put bikes on it. The larger the wheel, the greater the overall height (handlebars / saddle).

Towbar rack avoids exceeding van height, but you will need towbar & electrics.

One of the reasons I have a towbar and an Atera.
Also putting up the vehicles at that height, and then opening the tailgate is not good.

As long as your roof is down, I don't see an issue.

With mountainbikes mounted on the VW bike rack, we get to about 210 cm.

When we want to keep the bikes mounted and secure and still lift our roof - we have to reposition the handlebars in line with bikes, so that gets us well above 220 cm.

Could you use the 3rd and 4th slots instead of the 1st and second? It may save you messing about with the handlebars.

I believe that the bike on fourth slot fixes onto the one on the second? Not 100% sure, though.

In any case, it takes us maybe 10 seconds per bike. No hassle at all.

Bromptons can have their handlebars folded down and saddles dropped to keep them below the roof line. 20” children’s bikes stay below the roofline.

Handlebars still won't clear the roof when it's up, unless you turn them. Sadly have a small dent in the roof to confirm this.
