VW California back window repalacement (UK) - HELP!

Thread resurrection to update with a recent experience, South Wales glass fitter recommendation and T5.1 tailgate window part number.

The outer pane of our 2011 SE rear windscreen spontaneously shattered while on the motorway. No obvious impact point, so a mystery cause.

After reading several threads and to retain control we decided not to go via our insurers. A couple of main dealers didn’t really want to know, so we ordered the tailgate window from our local VW van centre and arranged fitting at Able Windscreens in Swansea. We gingerly removed the bike rack ourselves and stuck sticky backed plastic across the window to avoid it falling out on the way.

We were full of apprehension with worries about glass inside the tailgate, bodywork damage etc, but Able Windscreens went above and beyond and were meticulous with the repair. They also kindly collected the new window from the dealer and informed us of an almost imperceptible flaw so a second one was ordered. The window replacement was potentially complex with the possibility of having to strip down the tailgate to remove fallen pieces, but with careful attention to detail that was thankfully avoided.

It cost more than going through our insurers, but we’re glad we made that decision.

Able Windscreens are based in Swansea and cover South Wales. We were very pleased with the service and outcome and highly recommend them. They said they get a lot of call to replace leaking sliding side window units.

For information, the VW part number for the double glazed rear window with privacy tint for our 2011 SE is: V7E7 845 503 BN VB (£345 + VAT). Fitting was £110 + VAT.
