I am now awaiting my T5, however, I do not know what insurance company to choose.
Admiral are cheap but is it worth anything as the advisor wasn't sure if they covered a California until the quote was generated.
The Caravan Club was more expensive however seems to offer more cover/ value for money. But then an additional joining fee.
I looked at comfort and a few others but price rose dramatically.

Does anyone have any experience or advice.

As you can imagine the last thing I want is to be underinsured.

Many thanks.

Geezso if you scroll down the list there is a section dedicated to Insurance which should help you. If not, then post a question there and I'm sure you'll get some good advice.

One of the nice new features....takes a bit work of my back searching links ....:D

I'm just about to cancel my Cali insurance with Admiral. I just can't stand the thought of picking up the phone to speak to them anymore. No doubt I will be charged an outrageous 'admin' fee for early termination of my policy. A small price to pay for my peace of mind!

What problems have you had with Admiral? I have a multi-car policy with them and am considering them but, having read many of the posts her I am nervous.

Comfort are currently top of my list. Cheapest quote and best cover as long as you can live with their 36 hour rule.

If you were able to think of some outrageous modification they would no longer be able to cover you for, it may waive the admin/ cancellation fee as they are no longer suitable to insure you :)

When I called safeguard they were not the cheapest. The caravan club was (within the specialist insurers) very reasonable. I spoke to my father in law who has a motorhome and he is insured with safeguard. So with his recommendation we get ÂŁ20 Marks and Spencer vouchers each plus the 12 months over for 10 months price discount for being VIP it was still ÂŁ10 off the CC, I was ready to take it due to level of cover vs peace of mind and the lovely person prompted me if I had any other quotes, I mentioned CC and she beat it (well she beat the price I remembered CC is ÂŁ1.25 cheaper now, as I was slightly off).

Cant ask fairer than that :)

Problem 1 - at renewal of my multi car policy I was quoted roughly double what I had been quoted for the previous year. When I asked why, we entered the well rehearsed Admiral script (aka a load of ********). So I go off to the 'meerkats' and get a quote from Admiral that is almost exactly the same as the previous year. When I asked for an explanation, we enter another bit of standard script - also ********.
Problem 2 - I just bought a Land Rover Defender and phoned up Admiral expecting a competitive quote as this would be my third car on the policy. ÂŁ850! When I asked why they wanted nearly three times what they charge for my wife's Range Rover Sport it's off on another script - leaving me half-believing that the Defender must be the most stolen and crashed vehicle, particularly around my home postcode! And I go off (wasting more of my time) to the meerkats again and get a quote from Admiral for about ÂŁ320 for the Defender.
I have no idea what Admiral are up to but I have been left with no confidence at all in the company and am leaving.

I've been with M&S for a few years now but with my Touran not a Cali. 1st time this year they did the same thing, hiked from high 200s to over ÂŁ500. Anticipating a move to a Cali I have gone to Saga and nicely back under ÂŁ300. Hopefully they will be reasonable when I switch vehicle.

Just signed up to Comfort....the nicest people to deal with, a pleasure in fact. They were still pleasant even after a VERY long grilling from me on their 36hr policy :shocked

Oh and they were almost the cheapest (Admiral were cheaper but with a low personal effects cover and no GAP-type cover on the Cali).

The Insurance forum was incredibly useful to me when knowing what to look for, etc, etc.

Think that's what I am probably going to do as well.

Waiting for a call back from Comfort for a quote...intrigued.. What's the 36 hour rule??!!

If you leave your van unattended away from home for more than 36 hours it causes an issue.
Safeguard were cheaper for me and offered great cover.

It's all because they treat the policy as a motor home policy as opposed to small camper van/day to day car policy so they lump Calis in with large white motorhomes when they start looking at storage hence their focus on not storing it anywhere out of the ordinary i.e. you wouldn't want to store one of those big beasties on a road anywhere

Nice bunch to deal with though.

Did a lot of shopping around before opting for safeguard insurance. Got my ncb transferred over from dial car policy to the new cali. Very easy to setup .. Good cover

Safeguard were good to deal with but significantly more expensive for us...Comfort have allowed us to carry over the NCB; in a year's time I look forward to having to go through all this again :headbang

Seems complete opposite to me, comfort were miles out. Just goes to show its a lottery and insurance groupings on vehicles are pretty much meaningless

Those who are thinking of using Admiral be aware they are a pain when it comes to a claim.
Hard work, I had to chase them on a daily basis & had to liase between them & repairer.

Well...seems there's no choice for us..Comfort have refused to insure us as our Cali is parked on the street outside our house. Safeguard have quoted us and it's the same as The Co-Operative Insurance who we are currently with, but with the added 365 day European Cover & Breakdown Cover, so we'll be going with Safeguard.

As others say, if you leave your Cali unattended for more than 36 hours away from its normal storage location then you must inform Comfort. I had an extremely long conversation with a very helpful adviser about this. She reassured me that in the majority of instances this would be a formality and would not result in either an administration charge or a premium supplement. She assured me that a secure airport carpark for a couple of weeks would not be a problem.

She brought up the other example of a situation where you might be called home from the continent unexpectedly (e.g. If a relative were ill). In this case they would expect you to leave the Cali in a 'suitable' location and advise them. However an airport carpark would generally be acceptable again and in the worst case a small premium supplement would apply.

I am almost certainly going to go with Comfort as in all other ways their cover offers the best value for me and there are no scenarios where the 36 hour rule would have been an issue for me in recent years.

However I'd be interested to hear from any Comfort customers who have used Comfort and have advised them that they would be leaving their vehicle somewhere for more than 36 hours. Was this OK? Did any charges apply?

I would stay away from Comfort. They are officious and unhelpful.
