Tried ours for the first time last weekend. Drained it after use. Is that sufficient or do people flush a chemical through to avoid mildew in the system? If so what and how?

Thanks all....

We sterilised our new tank with Milton - 6 tablets for the 30L tank from memory. Apparently Boots own brand is cheaper. Drove around for a bit, ran kitchen tap, then drained both tanks. Refilled with fresh.

Thanks. Is that after each use?

Never done it in 4,5y , just make sure you put CLEAN water in and drain EVERY TIME when you get home after a trip. Water standing stil in the tank for weeks means growing bacteria's
Alltough i do got the tablets on my shelf in the garage....but never acutally cleaned the tank , a job i will do within short time now.....:thumb

Never put anything in mine apart from clean water then drain after every trip. Been ok for 9 years.

We use our fresh water tank for storing German air.

I am afraid to say that we haven't used our fresh water tank since we picked up our SE (new/ex demo) in October 2015 and don't really intend to. We've never used the sink, the tap or waste water tank either. This may seem strange but given the limitations of the sink and the extra maintenance/care needed to look after these facilities, we haven't yet found an occasion when there hasn't been a better and more convienient option. Neither Mrs B nor I would want to drink the water from the tank unless it's been changed very regularly and scrupulously cleaned out between fill ups. That just seems to be too much hassle given the alternatives. We usually end up staying on sites with much better facilities and if it's just a day out then we'll take the washing up home. However if we were to head off to some remote area we would probably reconsider using it for washing and washing up only.

There I've said it. :Nailbiting

That i can not understand , agree that if you use campsites you use theire facilities but still the fact you have all this at hand and don't even fill it up is pretty strange .
As i said above i never in 5y did anything special other than fill up the tank and drain it when home...so easy .
Again each theire own , and we try to use a washingbowl most of the times instead of the sink but thats becose it is much more handy than the sink.
When not on campsites but free aires the water comes in very handy and 30l does get you at least 2 - 3 days further when freecamping .Also by filling up the tank we always have water for the dog with us at any time any place witch is crucial for us.

All nothing personal against you that is;)
I know there are others never use the sink or watertank , some never even coocked in the Cali , some never sleep in the pop-top ....

Like HC we don't put anything special in the tank, AND I just use the garden hose to fill it. I'm such a slut.
However we don't use the water from the tank for drinking (except occasionally when boiled) - we keep a mini-jerrican in the van for water bottles, dog, and teeth (not necessarily in that order).

Okay, so when did I last sterilise the jerrican..?

Hello HC,
I should hang my head in shame but at least we do use both the cooker and fridge and sleep upstairs. We may get around to using the tanks one day but so far we haven't found them that useful. Unlike you, we don't have a dog. :thumb

I wonder if a lot of this depends on the degree of use... regular use itself will probably keep the whole thing clean. We use fairly frequently but Milton the system once in the Spring and once in the Autumn and always use food grade containers/hoses to fill. For us that feels like about right - we're definitely not too worried about harmless bacteria but do want to avoid mildew and any chemical concerns from non food-grade plastics.

milton at the start of the season (full tank with appropriate dilution), let it sit for 10-15 mins, run a couple of litres through the tap then drain fresh tank. refill with clean water and run a little more through tap, then drain both tanks. After that we just use the tank as needed throughout the year. Usually drain after each trip, but I have been known to leave it for a week if we are away consecutive weekends.

We drink the water from the tap and use it for kettle/cooking. Only time we don't is if we refill on site and the water doesn't taste nice, will only use it for cooking and kettle then, but that's purely a taste decision. We don't go anywhere particularly remote so always feel happy to trust water quality.

Nothing....

I just use the water tank for washing and washing up etc.

I keep cold water in bottles in the fridge fridge, and a 5 litre bottle in the van for making coffee etc. These are easily refilled as and when.

Following on from this can I ask - when the tanks are empty, is it better to leave the valves for fresh and waste water tanks open or closed?
Or doesn't it make any difference.

Hi I always empty tank when I get home take filler cap off it drains quicker and leave the valve half open on fresh water tank. Never use waste water tank valve is always open .

I've never bothered draining the fresh water tank or sterilising it in five years, though I did get round to buying some tablets (Katydin or something). It might be a good idea! Could someone remind me how to drain it direct (other than through the waste tank).
But I don't drink water from the tank unless it's boiled, mainly use it for washing & washing up. I buy cheap bottled water to drink straight, though that's mainly because we ran out of water when wild-camping on Jura, which was a bit of a nuisance!

Open the tap by the Gas Cylinder housing might be a good starting point.:thumb

Brilliant, thank you - will give it a go.
Be aware, it will dribble out from underneath as the drain opens onto the underneath plastic panel, rather than a spout as the Waste tank does.
