Hi all, as I use my Cali more and more, I'm wondering if an external windscreen cover would be a good idea or not?
Currently I'm using Brandrup reflective screens on the inside of the windscreen and front side windows together with the standard curtains, they work good but take some time to setup and put away. There is also some condensation with them.
I'm wondering would an external cover work just as good, be quicker to set up and put away and reduce condensation? The only down side would be putting it away when wet.
Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Padraic.

We have a silver screen external cover.
Considerably less condensation using the external cover compared to the internal blinds. I’m not sure why, however there are a couple of bright minds here that may know.

Cheers, what brand/type did you buy? How is it secured to the van?

Outside insulation on a carwindow is always better.

+1 for the Silverscreen. Had one for 8 years now. As good as the day we bought it, fits like a glove and comes with a waterproof bag for when you have to put it away wet. Don’t even consider any of the alternatives.

Fine with wind deflectors. We’ve used ours in all weathers with no problems whatsoever. Can’t recommend the enough. Windscreen wipers hold the front part of the screen in place but it’s tailored to fit with some webbing that loops over the passenger doors that once trapped keeps everything firmly in place. You could probably find a video on YouTube on fitting one as they make them for all kinds of camping vehicles.

You can also un-Velcro the centre panel only during the day, to enable more light into the living area.

We eventually settled on and bought the windscreen cover and matching roof topper for our Cali Ocean T6 from Rainbow Screens and have found them to be excellent.

TaylorMade Screen Covers and SilverScreen Covers are very good and the best imo. I'm not sure what came over me to buy a Reimo one whilst at Busfest because a door fixing tab became detached on first use. The only downside is that they are bulky and are often wet when packing away. You can lay them flat on the roof bed for storage.

Cheers for the advice so far. The better quality brands that have been recommended so far are quiet expensive, I've been quoted £169 for the silver screens one. Its seems very expensive, it would want to be very good for that money??

Well worth the money. Silverscreens fit and finish are way better than most other brands. Ours is 8 years old and going strong - £129 back then. Used in sub zero temps, used in 40C+, put away wet, drys quickly and just does it’s job. I’d have another in a snap if this one disintegrated tomorrow. PS. I don’t work for them, somethings are simply worth the investment. That’s why you have a Westy.

Here’s my Silverscreen on the T4. I also have one for the T5. Unbeatable! Pay the money; you won’t regret it.

Absolutely waterproof in my experience. I’ve had Silverscreens on a split bus, T2, T4 and now on our T5. We’ve been in gales, snowstorms, thunderstorms and all the rest of it over the years...never let us down.

We have never experienced any condensation on the inside of the windscreen, but this would depend (I guess) on how hot you like the interior at night! We have slept up in the Cairngorms with the heater on tickover with no damp on the inside of the screen.

Hope all this helps.

Not experienced any of the others.....but cant really fault our comforts screen which came as a set with a topper. Design wise very similar to to the other and packs down nice and small and fits between our chairs.

I did notice there is a used one for sale in the 'for sale' area.

Actually ignore me...just noted I've strayed into the T4 section so my opinion may not be of any help whatsoever.

All positive comments so far, might splash out on one.

But, in all honesty, could those who have them , say they could notice the difference in interior temp? Really?

No, couldn’t say we’ve noticed any difference in interior temperatures, but then we’ve never tested that aspect to any extent whatsoever...if it gets colder we turn the heater up!

What we have proved is that the insulation aspect is excellent. The Silverscreens are very well padded and we have no condensation on the interior screen and front door windows no matter how warm it gets inside the van compared to outside.

To be honest, we only use the the Silverscreen when it’s cold and dry as it’s bit of a ‘faff’ to put on if it’s raining. With our bus in the driveway I also use it when the bus is parked during the winter.

One other minor point is that once in position you have to slip off whichever side if you need to open a front door.

Nice 917 Mr sidepod...is that parked in your garage?

Ha. If only!! If I could drive one car it would be that. Truly scary but awesome.
Derek Bell must have kahunas the size of grapefruit to have raced that and lived to tell the tale.

As another said, can't say 100% it makes it warmer. But it can't be any worse, and the fact it prevents condensation is a big one.

Where they also come into their own is during hot weather where the can help cool the van. That i can 100% confirm.
