Z fold mattress topper vs self inflating mattress

Hi, we have recently both a 2013 Cali, it didn't come with any type of mattress topper for the downstairs bed - I have had a few night away and have quickly come to the realisation that I need some type of mattress topper to have a chance of a decent night's sleep. I have been reviewing a lot of the threads here and there is quite a bit of discussion on the best self inflating mattress, and/or the duvalay, etc - there are a lot of good tips there, which is great.

We have 4 in the van, so I like the idea of being about to setup the rear seats quickly in the morning, without the hassle of trying to deflate a mattress. The other consideration was that the duvalay when rolled up does take up quite some space, where as with a z fold mattress, they are quite neat, and allow things to easily be stored on top when folded away.

The z fold mattresses do seem to be a bit more expensive, but I would like to go with the best option rather than the most convenient. Anyone else in a similar situation, would be really interested to hear what you went with. Also any recommendations for a comfortable z fold mattress would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the club.

We went through a number of options using toppers of different types. It drove my wife mad. We finally settled on a duvalay and a panda mattress topper (small double) together. Both of these toppers will store in a Z fashion, albeit they dont have ‘creases’ or seams. I agree rolling takes up too much space. Having two toppers, which may sound excessive, allows us as much comfort as possible and if needed, we can move one topper to the upper bed (which actually works quite well). I’ve seen the inflating options, but for me, I would find the inflation and deflation process a bit laborious. I’ve managed to get our bed in an out routine down to a fine art and actually it isn’t a problem now, but each of their own.

Either way good luck with your quest there are so many types out there. It may take awhile to find the right solution for you.

We've similarly been through a few different topper options and have settled on the SeatoSummit. In the morning we enjoy the fun task of deflating it by rolling it up together with the bedding in a sort of 'vacuum pack' that then sits on the back shelf. It does take a bit more planning to make sure you give it time to self inflate or use a little pump to plump it up ready for bed time. We also like that there is some 'adjustment' in how hard or soft you inflate it.
One of the best ideas I heard is trying to get to the club shop so you can try out the options they have before buying. But having just typed that I've seen you're in the Netherlands!! What was the place Hotel California used to go to in the Netherlands?

I went for this one through Amazon for the downstairs bed as my Cali (2013) didn’t have a topper either. It’s a Z fold and I find it comfortable enough. My (ex)girlfriend and I are both relatively lightweight however.

I bought my camper from Camper Centrum Nederland, very good customer service from them so far.

We will be travelling from Ireland (Where I am from originally) next week, over to Fishguard, will spend a week travelling around South Wales & England before getting the Ferry to Den Haag, so will try and get something sorted before then.

Calibed and Brandrup offer the best, most comfortable, least hassle options for Z-fold mattresses. I found a barely used Calibed Prestide III on Ebay Classified for 200 euro (1/2 price). Sold the VW uncomfort mattress that came with the Cali for 150 so was only out 50 euro. Total game changer and still retain the convenience and speed of stowage.
