I see there is a new law coming that states quite rightly that you should give1.5m clearance to cyclists.
I hope this will work in reverse because I'm fed up with cyclists squeezing down the left between my vehicles and road side at junctions/traffic lights etc and weaving in and out of stationary traffic. Already had scratches on our car from this and of course it's a case of pay for the repair yourself.

Road tax, insurance and a licence plate is what is needed, in the summer a cyclist took off the wife's mirror at traffic lights. He knew what he did and we shouted for him to stop but we were just given the finger.

List in order of severity.
A) car scratched by cyclist leaving less than 1.5m in passing
B) cyclist paralysed by motorist leaving less than 1.5m in passing

I think we need to get a perspective on this matter. Careless driving kills cyclists. Careless cycling doesn’t kill motorists.

It does kill pedestrians though!

Council spent 1000ks putting a cycle lane in near us and rarely used by cycles who stay on the road. My view is all road users should have road rules and follow them for everyone's safety.

"Careless cycling doesn’t kill motorists". but careless cycling often puts themselves in harm's way.

Everyone should cycle more(and don't mean on a sundayafternoon near the canal...) than you know how it's like to have a car do a stupit mavouvre to pass you 10 m away from a red light to stop ....car drivers simply need to leave place for cyclist and non of you mirrors would be scratched....
Sorry guys , i cycle to work in the city of Antwerp every day and there's not even 1/10 drivers that pass a cyclist in a safe way .
I use the cyclepaths , follow the rules , wear high vis vest , a helmet , switch light on in dark , ....
Next time you are behind the steering wheel and you need the pass a cyclist imagine yourself it's your son/daughter or grandkid ... bet you slow down and leave room ...;)

this post will sit in the same camp as
Beach or Ocean which is best and Marco Polo or Cali which is best

Completely agree. As a (motor)cyclist, I think every driver should be made to ride a bike on the road, motor version, or not.

If cyclist stay off the road they won't get injured or killed.

Before anyone asks, I am a cyclist but I stick to the 1,000s of miles of cycle paths and trails so I can have stress free cycling.

Well I cycled myself and agree that a lot of motorists are inconsiderate to cyclists. However, there are also a lot of cyclists who are just as bad. Nice day here today in the Peak District so lots of people out and about and what do we get, cyclists two or three abreast on the main A6 road creating a tailback and leading to frustration which in turn leads to more likelyhood of someone getting hurt so it works both ways.

That’s fine but I also get that some people cycle to work, or school, even I go to work on mine sometimes (although I do work from home now, most days)

I cycle with my sons (ages 3 & 5) to school daily. We have no choice but to use the road. Section 72 of the 1835 Highways Act has been interpreted to mean that cycling on the footway is a criminal offence.

There is no cycle path so the road is all we have.

That’s right. I got a ticket for riding my bike across a pavement in Whitby into a parking space. Don’t go to Whitby on the bike anymore. Scarborough is much more bike friendly.

Leave a bit earlier and walk !

=====Quote=====
F1 If any person shall wilfully ride upon any footpath or causeway by the side of any road made or set apart for the use or accommodation of foot passengers; or shall wilfully lead or drive any horse, ass, sheep, mule, swine, or cattle or carriage of any description, or any truck or sledge, upon any such footpath or causeway; or shall tether any horse, ass, mule, swine, or cattle, on any highway, so as to suffer or permit the tethered animal to be thereon;. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . F2; every person so offending in any of the cases aforesaid shall for each and every such offence forfeit and pay any sum not exceeding [F3level 2 on the standard scale], over and above the damages occasioned thereby.

The word ride refers to horse riding. The act of cycling on the footpath is illegal as a bicycle is classed as a carriage. I would also interpret the above to mean that pushing a bike on the footway is just as illegal as cycling one.

Exactly! Scarborough (which, I think, might actually be the same council as Whitby?) has a specific motorbike crossing point on the pavement into a designated bike park.

Well Said....!

I'm a cyclist and motorist.
I think the law could only be properly exercised in cases with clear evidence which is a good thing.
But it's also a good thing if at least some drivers begin to respect it.
It's all about people at the end of the day, not the tag of 'Driver' or 'cyclist'.
I get frustrated in equal measure. Frankly some cyclists are as ignorant as some drivers when it comes to respecting each others safe use of the road.
However I get where @Amarillo is coming from but unfortunately its not the whole story.
I'm a runner too...don't get me started on that one at junctions :mute. No longer own a motorcycle but
overall my experience has given me a pretty balanced view and think that some people need educating rather than being clouted by hard and fast rules... I'd love to see more road safety adverts on TV about such subjects.

Agree. Careless is the key word. We all owe a duty of care to our fellow citizens.

ALL road users should respect the rules of the Road and in order to enforce that ALL road users have to be identifiable in some way.

ALL ROAD VEHICLES should have a minimum width of 5ft, including bicycles used on the road network. Then they cannot weave through the traffic, ride abreast or sneak up on the inside or ride on pavements .

I can't agree with you on that one @WelshGas.
'Safe progress' is often a term used on advanced driving courses particularly on 2 wheels.
If a cyclist couldn't make progress due to the size of gaps they can get in, many would switch back to a car. Same for motorcyclists. It's the manner of the progress that will make it safe or unsafe.
If a cyclist can take advantage and be out of the way of other traffic everyone is a winner.

Rules of the road? Absolutely. That’s what I mean about 0 to 70 times. I would never ride or drive above the speed limit, me lud.

Tell that to the cyclists who don’t use the provided cycle paths at road junctions around our way and instead weave in and out of the traffic.
If the vehicle is stationary at lights or parked then the cyclist should Also maintain a 1.5 m safety distance from said vehicle at All times.
