Does anyone use a silicone “fry wall” or seen one demonstrated?

I can see some pros and cons and their are reviews on Amazon. Want to know if the positives outweigh the negatives for a Cali user.

Lidl do a flat one that you can also use as a pan strainer and pan stand. Basically a flat, slightly flexible perforated thingy. They are very useful - and given they are flat are easy to store.

Only problem is if you want one you'll have to wait until they have them in again!

Thanks for the info, Branco. I’ve used flat ones before and not really for me as you have to move the guard to sort out the food. It’s the “wall” idea I like about this design.

I use a multi section pan with lid. A bit like a ridge monkey but cheaper. Works very well.

Those that have done frying and grilling will know that without a lid the fat and grease will get everywhere.

Interesting, we just use a pan with a lid, I've also in the past Ive used a flat one/gauze.

Does it pack down flat otherwise it's just too much space for me in the van.

You make a good point Loz, in fact I always cook outside so I dont even know why I commented lol

Rolls into a cone shape, so needs to be good to justify. At the mo, my instinct is. . . nah!

Everytime I suggest such a thing, Mrs Loz says 2 words...

... COOK OUTSIDE! :)
In 10 years we never cooked inside our old van (or before that) but then we’ve never had an indoor hob.

The Cali Ocean will allow us to camp in more extreme weather conditions when the lure of a cooked brekkie before braving the elements sounds very attractive.

When we camp with a driveaway awning (and we have a a few for different camping scenarios) it’ll be outside.

We do though, a lot of stopover camping where setting up to cook outside isn’t on.

The Cali is going to be a completely different experience for us. Whilst waiting I think “the madness” is setting in and I’m overthinking everything !

Yes only natural. The Cali is a huge investment and you want to preserve it, whilst also getting the max from its facilities.

This is the pan we use. We bought it from a fishing shop and it came complete with a case.

It has a lid so splatter is contained. It is cheap enough to replace if needs be.

So far no signs of non stick coating showing any signs of wear.

We also use a wonder cooker lid -> http://bit.ly/2RBI95b

Brilliant for making toasties in a frying pan as well as fried eggs without having to baste them. They were sold by Lakeland Plastics years ago - I remember being pretty non plussed when we received one as an Xmas present from my mother in law 'she's only bought us a pan lid!!' But they are brilliant. Sadly very few around now. We have one in the kitchen and one in the van.

Having a Beach we always cook outside. :)

I don't like any kind of cover if I'm frying as they tend to hold the steam in as well as the fat splatter. I do most cooking in the van - that's what the hob is for! - but if the weather's warm and I want a fried breakfast I have a little gas stove that packs down very small so I use that, otherwise I just accept that the price of a great breakfast is a bit of cleaning up. For frying I always remove the plastic bowl from the sink so it doesn't melt and use the right hand gas ring so as to limit the spatter to easily cleaned parts. Buying good old-fashioned dry-cured bacon also helps as it isn't full of water.

You’re right about the steam, BG. That’s why I was interested in the “collar” with its sloping sides so the steam can escape, but i’m still not sure about it.

Totally get where Mrs Loz is coming from. Charlie, my hubby, likes sites with loos/showers. Couldn’t work it out for years. Then the penny dropped. Extended periods of time trapped in a tin box with me - enough to test the patience of a saint . So me totally emersed in cooking outside is a kind of peaceful respite, getting fed is just a happy bonus.

One of the reasons I got a ridge monkey :thumb
I have 2 of the old style Ridgemonkey XLs which I love and use in the kitchen at home too.

When I want a good old fry though, it ends up more of a steam. So looking for a messy cooks solution to frying with no lid.
