I have a 16 inch spare that i have never needed to use,
in wintertime van is fitted with 16s and in summer it has 18s.

Call me feckless but i aint ringing up any insurance company to
check if its okay to fit my spare.

The 16" is almost certainly on your sticker, so you wouldn't need to.

Old style I'm afraid and being black wheels hard to see.

Didn't notice a difference ride wise but did when I had the -30mm lowering spring. Rear is fine, front is a little trashy over the bumps

Going from 17 to 18 isn’t going to make a great deal of difference, I’d have said. (You do notice going between 16 to 18.) As pjm-84 says, lowering the vehicle (while great for handling) is a far greater compromise in ride quality.

I just checked some pics from my old van
I ran 255/45/18 103Y.
Great wheels and tyre combo. Just as comfortable as the 16s I ran.

If my current van hadn’t been supplied with the Devonport 17s it’s on now, (which I really like) I would have bought another set of 18s

My Bus came fitted with black 17” Casca’s & 30mm lowered but they weren’t to my taste, so that’s why I sourced a set of 18” Sportlines..... no noticeable deterioration in ride comfort.

Over the winter it’s had 17” steels with Goodyear Cargo CV winter tyres on.
I’ve been shocked that the winter tyres (215) create so much more road noise than the summer ones (255). The ride is also much worse but that could be something to do with the insane pressure put into them when I had them balanced.....
