Cali or an F type

Hi at the moment I have an e63 am cabriolet and Mrs Vick has my dads all 300 so there will be another car if I got the Cali and of course the amg will go back.

Get the California. Better residuals, more comfortable, quieter and not forgetting more useful for everyday stuff. Like collecting bulky furniture, tip runs and people moving and tea and bacon at the beach etc etc

What else is in the garage...?

We have the Cali as our daily driver and a little secondhand Porsche Cayman we bought when it was 3 years old as our second car and fun stuff. The Porsche is now 8 years old and has never had a major fault. It’s great fun too. You can pick them up secondhand (10 years old) for small change these days.

Personally no contest, the Cali is beautiful, versatile useful and cool, what can you say about the other vehicle...

Have you ridden one? You might be surprised.

I'm just way too big for modern RR bikes. When I bought my GSA (which I use to run around on 2person / sports suspension) I sat on the BMW S1000R and its just looked tiny. I have until Feb this year to make a decision and then I lose my full no claims bonus (again).

I recently sat on the Husky 701SM and again I could get both feet flat on the floor. Relatively speaking I have short legs!

Bought my first Porsche, a second hand 911 (993 air cooled) in 2004 at the grand age of 35, got addicted, then bought a new 997 Gen 2 C4S cabriolet in 2010.... 2 years later went on to another new 991 C2 cabriolet. I quickly came to realise what a complete waste of money the whole thing is.

Fast forward a few years and I went for a new LR which was an eye opener.... An amazing piece of kit. Once you've done the sports car phase it quickly fizzles out - practicality and quality of life takes a front seat.

Also now have a new, well, now 1 year old, Cali and wouldn't get rid for anything.

The missus hates it, so had to get a twinaxle Elddis to give her home comforts when we go away for longer spells!

A quick blast In a garage queen won't match what you get from a California. Believe me.

Some good observations about sports cars there. Overtaking in current road conditions in even the fastest accelerating cars is becoming more difficult and even when it’s safe many drivers see it as an affront and make life difficult getting past or tailgate you afterwards. It adds up to a stressful experience just going out and trying to enjoy your car. The only sure way to be able to enjoy a bit of performance is on a motorbike (if you don’t mind sacrificing a bit of personal safety!).

On a practical side, and within the road traffic laws and taking into account the state of the countries roads and today’s traffic congestion.

What can the F type do that the fully specced California cannot do?

I know it has a higher top speed, acceleration etc . Not a lot of use on the M25 and elsewhere.

I’m not going to type out a list but I think this list will be a lot longer.

I’ve had the sports cars in the past and they are basically an impractical vehicle on today’s roads. On the continent maybe, but here the roads, boy racers, jealous tossers all combine to take any enjoyment out of owning one.

The California is not just a bed on wheels, it is so so much more.

I think part of the issue is the demographic responding. Lets face it we have all been there done that and at a time when pushing the boundaries and beyond was more accepted. My son still has the desire and would never buy a cali before an f type no matter the mathematical benefits.

We have the benefit of hindsight and Im pretty sure if I hadnt already done it as a petrol head I would still aspire to it to get it out the system - better to have loved and lost bla bla.

I owned my first Ferrari when I was 29 and at a time where there was no pcp hire arrangement or massive Ferrari corporate marketing nonsense. In fact you hardly ever got to see one, I remember stopping in the services on my way to Aston Martin newport pagnell and an appreciation crowd appeared wanting to talk to me and see it, today they ignore you and think your a bit of a knob.

Thing is the whole piece is screwed now as your range rover, lambo etc is now so accessible by Joe average and as a result the romance and desire has gone.
These days its just like the latest mobile phone here today gone tomorrow needing the next fix.

Why own an F type ? Because you want one of course. It looks , steers, sounds and overtakes better than a cali ever will. Its a totally different feeling.

Whats the secret imo if you still desire this type of vehicle ? Get the slowest ,cheapest best looking one that gives you the buzz no matter how brief the encounter and keep the cali you bought first.

Gen 2 3.4 , I have the boxster version exact same although just had the failed a/c condensers so put some mesh in now to protect the new ones.

Went to buy a used 911 and the Cayman was sitting next to the car I was interested in. Took it out and was hooked. Plus it was about £15k cheaper
Actually preferred the overall size. The 911 has ballooned over the years.

I’ve heard about fitting mesh grills to the lower air intake and it’s something I want to get fitted to ours.
Due a service in a couple of months, will probably get something done then.
Just took it out of Porsche servicing last year and started using Kev at KW Performance.
Great mech.

You can do any number of track days in a hired car for the depreciation cost/tax hit on a powerful sports car. If you care about such things your neighbours will be probably more impressed by a Cali anyway.

I used to have a Porsche GT3 and most people looked at me as if I was a complete w****r.

Since owning my Cali people have a genuine interest in it, i have even had people asking me to show them around when getting fuel! Also I am now waved into the line of queing traffic rather than people refusing to let me out by staying as close to the car in front of them as possible.

I would never buy another sports car whilst living in UK.

He said, everyone stops to talk about his car, me included. What a stunner...!!!

People are more interested in older cars than newer, these days.
