Cyclists: Scourge of the streets?

Well I think you should review your original post on this matter.
My interpretation is that you were out cycling as a family and the “ The Old Git “ was doing exactly the same. He came upon you and was about to overtake when one of you moved into his path. There is no legal requirement to ring a bell when overtaking when there is no obstruction, just as there is no requirement for you to sound your car horn when overtaking.
So who was at fault, him for overtaking you or a family member who moved into his path. Judging by the comment you quoted him saying you were at fault as if you had been riding 2 or 3 abreast he would have said something else such as “ Excuse me, or Get out of the way or Keep to the Left “ so that he was able to pass you.
20mph is not fast for modern cyclists and just like you when driving many cyclists do not slow down when overtaking if it is safe to do so and like most car drivers do not expect people, cyclists or cars to vere into their lane or pathway for no apparant reason.

Trust me I can be a miserable old git but not on a bike.

I said 'An Old Miserable git' for starters

One of us being a '6 year old' little girl

'He said nothing to alert us but be aggressive'

20mph is far too fast when theres children wobbling in front of you

He was still a miserable git, no matter how much you defend the miserable git with whom you never met!

Think you should change your bio from 'Retired after 42 years and enjoying life' to 'Retired after 42 years and being arguementative for the sake of it because I'm bored of being retired'
No, just trying to elicit the facts. But your comments lead me to believe you were at fault and just not prepared to admit it. Your description of the other cyclist says it all. I wonder what he thought of you?

Again, completely disagree with you. How can a 6 year old be at fault. He was a miserable git, simple! No matter how much you defend him.
Stop blaming your daughter - accept your responsibilities.

Can we all have an assurance that no MOG's were hurt or abusively treated in the making of the latter part of this thread? :shocked

When I was 6 I could ride my bike in a straight line. None handed.

True, hands up, on reflection, my fault completely for taking her for a family bike ride, next time a grumpy git on a bike is coming our way, i will push her in the nettles, to make way, that will teach her! I am still lesrntong being a dad so thank you for sharing your lovely wisdom @WelshGas
Having brought up 5 children one of whom has just completed the Paris-Brest-Paris Long Distance Cycle Race, Yes, I do have some experience of cycling, of teaching children to cycle confidently and of cycling many thousands of miles with and without them.
And, there are always two sides to every story.

Just agree to differ guys, move on. :thumb

It’s an audax, not a race and in what context is that even relevant?

Some old man on his bike doing 20mph shouted at my wife and 6 year for getting in his way "get out my way, i could have knocked you over" on a nice old railway track converted to a cycle path, whilst they were also cycling (see photo). Wifes reply "slow down then you idiot, she's only 6!"
That old man are the reason cyclists get a bad rep, but he would be the same driving, walking, jogging, shopping etc. Some people in life are just miserable gits and have no respect for anyone else.

Is that the cycle path from Bangor to Ogwen via Bethesda? Looks familiar!
PS It wasn’t me! ;)

Correct, my mistake. The last race was in 1951, but I would still say it was a Personal Race for each participant.
Why did I mention it, just to illustrate that myself and my family have a little experience of cycling over the years and I might be a miserable OLD git but do have some experience of life, more so than some.

Well for starters, you have made up facts about my side of the story and then became judge and jury to defend a miserable git who you have never met or even spoken too. I didnt say he was coming from behind, he was actually coming towards my wife and daughter so had loads of time to see them. Secondly, they were stationary, not riding. And no, ringing a bell isn't the law, but then again helping someone who has fallen on the pavement get back on their feet again isn't the law either, but its nice and courteous to do so!
Now we get the facts. They were stopped, blocking the pathway and despite seeing someone cycling towards them decided not to move over to let him pass. Consideration works both ways.

Sounds like a long boring argument about a bloke not on here to defend him self. Often these days parents way over exaggerate the huge danger to their kids from anything.. Conkers. Bikes. Nettles ( falling in some is part of being a kid). Throwing things. Climbing trees. Screaming at the top of their voices.. THE KIDS... WATCH THE KIDS... DON'T GO NEAR THEM OR THEY MIGHT EXPLODE. Or something. I've witnessed this many times. I'm sticking up for the allegedly grumpy cyclist who probably sauntered past without a Helmet on at 5mph and doesn't even realise anythings happened. By the sound of him it will of been a penny farthing and he wore a stove pipe hat instead of his helmet.

I told this story, not for opinions or for an argument as we all share our passion all things Cali, but a for a bit of Cali owner Solidarity whether right or wrong. That man really upset my wife and little girl whilst we were all having a lovely family day out. He really was very aggressive!

However, that man and welsh gas have had the last laugh, because I have had to go to A&E tonight. Because of that bike ride, I got bit by something on my legs and arms, had a reaction, then got an infection, bite blistered up but now leaving hozy with a pack of antibiotics so feel better now Ive seen someone professional. Been in pain all day, so day off work as I cant walk hence been argueing with welshgas all day as I have been the grump really. Sorry for being ratty @WelshGas , know your only defending the old man. For all I know, he could have been a war veteran and heard some sad news and wanted to get home asap to his family, so we as a family are sorry for getting in your way [old man].

Now please, no more talk about my bloody bike ride and experience.

I will tell you something for nothing though, the NHS were bloody amazing. Phoned the non emergency 111 number at 8.30pm, and they booked me an appointment with a Nurse at the nearest Hospital A&E department 10.00pmm and I only had to wait 5 minutes before I was seen. Thank you sooooooooo much NHS!!!!

I'm a road cyclist. But I've not been out for over a year, as we got a WattBike Atom to use at home and we hook it up to Strava and Zwift. It's brilliant. Super safe, no risk of aggressive or dangerous drivers (a minority, I know but enough to put me off) and can cycle whenever I like as it's super time-efficient.

So you’d recommend the Wattbike @CaliKate ? I’m just looking at buying one at the moment, mainly for winter training for me and my other half.

Do have a turbo trainer, but like the idea of it always being setup and ready to go. I am concerned it will be a fad that slowly gets less and less use.

Yes, I would. Both me and hubby use it. So that justified the cost. Zwift is awesome. You can do training plans, group rides, races. There are loads of different worlds in which to ride. They launch new stuff all the time. My hubby has used it to train for a Pyrennes trip next month and says it's the fittest he's ever been. And it hooks up to Strava. I love it. Safe cycling in the comfort of my own home. (We don't have a garage so that's the only issue, it can stink out our spare room!)

Robot cars are due soon, so maybe the answer is get rid of us humans and have robots on bikes instead, sure they would get on better, maybe, even work together! Imagine working together, as one! These robots could teach us humans so much.

There you go, riding on the pavement again!

Is that an Amazon transformer drone or just a small Deliveroo consignment?

If someone could come up with a thread that incorporated: cyclists v the rest, 4motion v 2wd, Beach v Ocean and chuck a sprinkling of Brexit in for good measure, it would be an absolute belter.

Sorry, only joking.
