How does your van wear your board or skis?

Inside in the under seat ski slot, can't bear the thought of all the road salt on my lovely skis. Once parked up for skis are under the van.

I carried mine on the roof bars without a bag for a season and even up there I had a lot of rust on my splitboard. I got on much better with a roof box and that also allowed my solar panel to see the sun.

I do have Thule a ski roof box I used to use on my A4 but it would be such a long way up I think I would need a ladder to access it. How do you find getting gear in and out the box?

Hi Chris, I adapted my towbar-mounted Atera Strada DL3 to take ski racks, and can carry skis plus up to 3 bikes at once.
As mentioned above, road salt can be an issue (especially lower down with a towbar rack) so I am now putting the skis in lightweight ski bags and they still fit fine in the clamps and are better protected.
Photos of my diy effort are at the end of the thread below:

Although I haven’t ended up keeping it there, I did trim the bottom of both legs so it would fit under the bench if I want to. View attachment 53371View attachment 53372
Bought the ladders and cut the bottoms as you did, perfect, will now try using the ski box. Will keep my ones in the back stored vertically next to the cupboard as they do not take up much space at all, my drawer is full of other stuff lol

I’m looking forward to some photos from your next snow adventure!

I have the bars a box fitted and the ladders trimmed as you have done, my next question relates to the French Toll roads and what rate you get charged at, Cat 1 under 2 meters or Cat 2 for the additional height (2 - 3 metes), with the box my van is 2.45 metres. Guidance suggests the box is not included for purposes of the toll rate but since measurement is automatic I do not see how this can be correct.

Get a Sanef Liber-t tag before you go & and set up a direct debit. If they accidentally overcharge you the height, you can get the difference refunded when you get back home.

France - Liber-t tag

If you are a Class 1 vehicle and have a roof load such as a roof box or bicycle that takes your overall height over 2m, you will still be charged as a Class 1 vehicle. There is equipment (laser and 3D imaging) in the Liber-t lanes that can distinguish between 'Class 1 + roofload' and Class 2 vehicles. You should be charged at Class 1 rate.

Occasionally however, this auto detection equipment may incorrectly identify you as Class 2. We advise you to check your bill when you receive it or view your future toll balance in your 'Account Summary' area and if you have been incorrectly charged at Class 2 rate, please open a toll adjustment request. Just go to your 'Account Summary' area, scroll down and next to 'My Tags' click 'View Tolls', click on the toll you wish to be adjusted, click 'Raise a Toll Adjustment Request' and complete the toll adjustment request form. We will ensure that you are reimbursed the difference the following month. Toll adjustments must be requested within 3 months of the transaction date.//

Thank you for that comprehensive response, I will certainly get the Sanef Liberte, that will also reduce stress at the tolls.
