After initially Insuring in February my T6 Cali with LV but only to find out 2 weeks later that the habitation area is not included, canceled it. Then received a call from them to say it may not say it on the details but in the event of an accident we would insure it, to late already cancelled.

Well after reading on here from some members that they had insured with them and all was covered, thought I would give them another go.

Guess what the Habitation area is not covered, even though the proposal says, Vehicle VW MotorCaravan.

How can they propose to cover only 70% of your Cali?

Are there any Restrictions on cover?
Any members with LV may wish to recheck with them even though in the proposal it says,
“In-car equipment cover is limited to £1000 where not installed as part of the vehicle manufactures original specification"

When I've interrogated my insurer the answer comes back that they basically cover everything that was part of the original factory build and optional extras ( so long as they have been listed ). This should mean that the habitation equipment (kitchen, beds etc) are, in the case of the California covered, which seems to tie in with your last paragraph.

The £1000 cover is for any non factory fit items. They clarified this as any personal accessories, such as clothing, cooking utensils, bedding, etc...

If that was LV I would check with them again as I escalated the call and they confirmed even though I pointed out the paragraph they insisted this did NOT cover Campervans or Motorhomes dont take it for granted its covered

yep got that and understood but Not habitation ie all built in cupboards, cooker fridge wardrobe.

Same problem In had with LV , I even went through to a manager who finally confirmed habitation was NOT COVERED by the underwriter and they cancelled my policy without penalty. If you ask the them to give you something in writing to prove otherwise they will refuse to do this. Cheap is not always best, stick to the specialists like Comfort and Safeguard, at least they know exactly what a California is !!!

Admiral, called them at various stages of deciding and taking out policy and got the same answer each time " all covered as its as per standard California" but as its an insurance company I won't find. out until its too late!

My policy refers to the following Endorsement ....

19.Camper vans
This endorsement amends or provides cover as stated. The policy definition of your car includes Camper Vans.
We will pay up to £500 for personal belongings including non standard fixtures and fittings if they are damaged or stolen.
You are covered to attend Club Rallies and Competitions as long as your use does not involve racing, pace making, rallying, track days trials or speed tests either on a road, track, private grounds or at an off road 4x4 event.

Don't shoot the messenger please - I got the same reply when I contacted LV, several times, that my California was fully covered including all habitation. The lady had me on hold to confirm.
I think that these insurance companies use various underwriters and it may be the case that who I'm insured with does cover everything, but depending on each clients situation (age, address, etc) the underwriter used at that point in time may not...
When I had renewal for my motorbikes, the underwriter used was changed by my insurer to give better cover / deal at the time, with different requirements.

Ask them to confirm it in writing, I can guarantee they won't. I can't stress enough, it is really not worth the risk on a vehicle of this value to cut corners on insurance.
I did and they will not. They also mentioned that they make aware all anyone that inquires that was not my experience, I asked the question re the habitation area.

Here's the email exchange I had with LV in October for my Beach. They also do a full refund of price paid if stolen not recovered in 1st year from New.

Hello, can you please confirm that all the factory fitted camper items and options on the VW California Beach are fully covered. For example pop-top roof, sliding rear seats etc.

thanks

Hi A--------------
Nice to see you have some cover in the event of a claim, (hope not) but due to there inconsistency and there denial of their printed policy as per my original post, I do not trust them.

Yes the inconsistency is strange. Perhaps they treat Oceans and Beaches differently.

Hi Geoff,

You are correct re that paragraph as stated within the proposal, however this only reflects cars and not California Oceans. As said earlier for confirmation I escalated this to management level and they confirmed all is not covered, ie the habitation equipment.
If you do not believe me or others who have cancelled there policy mid stream call them and ask the question re habitation equipment.

best,

Will

During my research they were Not prepared to cover “Camping” accidents such as cooking fires, wind damage etc:

Following posts on this subject I phoned LV
For clarification prior to renewal
Call transferred to an underwriter who confirmed the whole and entire fitted equipment which he confirmed included kitchen unit etc
This is reflected in the slightly higher premium for our Ocean compared to a Beach
note.... the only campervan listed in glasses guide and CAP is the California,
This legitimises clarification for insurance purposes
I’m very happy with LV and fully aware of the importance of correct insurance , I’m pretty bored with the endless whinging on this subject

I'm very happy for your contribution upon this forum.

The idea of the forum is to share knowledge and experience, you have yours and many have expressed theirs, as said the policy and agents contradict themselves, I am not prepared to be without a van whilst its battled out for months on end.

Please do not respond.

The offer by the Caravan and Motorhome Club Insurance to match any quote for renewal less £25 was the solution to this quandary for me for the moment. What their renewal cost will be is another question.

Mine has stayed the same or reduced by a few £ over the past 5 yrs of renewals.

Well after reading all of these comments re LVinsurance I am off to look for a quote from Comfort. We bought our Cali ocean last year and have been with LV for nearly s year. Feb 2020 renewal due soon and looks like we need to change insurers. We went with LV as that’s the car insurer and they gave us a ‘multi vehicle’ policy but my concerns continue to grow re LV.
I’ve read posts on the forum that suggest Comfort any others worth considering ?

Caravan & Motorhome Club, Camping & Caravan Club, Safeguard, AIB. The latter two have connections with the Forum.
Be aware of the 48 hr rule with Comfort.

Caravan and Motor home insurance honoured my LV quote, ended up paying less than £190 for first rate cover.

Save at least £25 on your renewal*
Our exclusive Premium Saving Guarantee means if your existing motorhome insurance renewal is cheaper than ours we'll beat it by at least £25

I’m very happy with my move to Safeguard having only moved from Comfort as they would not cover me as I no longer have a drive.
