Hi, it’s time to buy insurance for my new California ocean, may I ask which insurance I should pick: car, van or some special campervan insurance?
Thank you so much.

I went with Comfort after doing the rounds and comparing policies/pricing.

Safeguard filled my criteria. Multi European trips including full breakdown/recovery.

List what cover you must have and shop around before deciding. They don't all give the same. eg may not give carparking cover at Airports if you do flight packages.

what would you say are the must haves for insurance policy. Should we consider tracker/steering wheel lock ?

I had no request for extra devices to be fitted nor any offer to discount if any fitted. I do have a Pro-Stoplock as a visible/physical deterrent. I was surprised at needing a Tracker as a previously, cheaper, owned Mobilehome required a tracker.
This may have changed due to current thefts of vans and campervans, location and on or off street parking remain the main cost factors.

yes comfort, part of Aviva
If you check you will find that Comfort is not part of Aviva merely that they had reference to Aviva when setting up,

I was with Aviva with previous vehicles and had to look elsewhere when my Cali was purchased as they, Aviva, did not insure Campervans nor recommended who I could transfer to.

Just trying to sort my insurance out now but they are all saying I need a Thatcham 5 or 6 tracker fitted. Is this normal??

Tried Comfort Tracey? Discount too with your username from this forum...

No.
The California has a factory fitted Thatcham 1 Alarm and Immobiliser. If the company doesn't already know this then I, personally, would walk away.
I use the Caravan & Motorhome Club. Not the cheapest but at least they know what the California is and how it is used, and I have had good dealings with them in the past.
If the quote is very cheap then make sure they are insuring it as a Camper and not just a car. Ask them the simple question, If I'm frying bacon for a bacon bap and the pan catches fire, am I covered?

Comfort have quoted £493.38 but want a tracker. AIB have quoted £475.81, no tracker needed but only £1000 contents. Safeguard have quoted £1354! Am just waiting for Caravan & Motorhome Club to come back to me.
This is our first camper van and is for 3 drivers, on being our son but hes 33, we all have clean licences with no claims.

why do you need a tracker Tracey, several peeps have insured recently with Comfort without the need for a tracker? I know one person did say it was because it was kept on the road. go back to them for clarification.

I think it is totally wrong for an Insurer to insist on a Tracker before offering Insurance. They should All offer Insurance based on the vehicle and its built in security and then a Discount if the owner fits additional, approved, security.
By insisting on a Tracker the company is mitigating their own risk at your expense but if they offer a discount then the owner can decide if the additional expense of additional security is worthwhile. Rant over.

Ok so just got off the phone to Comfort and the tracker is needed because of the value of the vehicle. Apparently, as soon as it gets to £75K you need a tracker. That is the retail of it if I ordered today but it wasn’t when I ordered it so they then tried to tell me that if I was to have a total loss on the vehicle they would only give me the ‘retail’ value when I ordered it! I then had to explain that this then wasn’t ‘New for Old’ and after a long conversation they agreed I was correct. Just going to go over the policies now to see what’s the best

Might be worth trying Brentacre as it is one the recommended ones by the DIY van conversion owners.

Agree, but you need to check which Insurance company they use, Brent acre are just Agents, and some of the companies have dubious reviews. So check carefully.

I’m glad about that, I won’t require one so I will stick with Comfort who I with last year for our MoHo. The new for old saves a few hundred quid for GAP insurance alone, plus I am currently using the DAS law feature which have been excellent for my personal injury claim.

just obtained my quote for the Ocean, a fantastic £268 excl breakdown cover. I also got the club 5% discount. They didn’t ask about the tracker as the list value was £67500.

We have just moved to Comfort this year. Their cover seemed the best, particularly for contents + £5k. I may have got an introductory rate but it was significantly cheaper than any other except for adding to an existing Admiral car policy to go multi-vehicle. The contents on that is only £500 so not sufficient. Policy is with Aviva, motorhome.

Past experience of Insurance and Trakers was that they had to be Professionally installed with a Certificate to be acceptable. DIY wasn't but may be now.

possible source

I insured with Comfort, you don’t have to have a tracker. They say you have to have:

Cat1 Alarm /Imobiliser (which the Cali has as standard)
OR
for vehicles without the above a Cat5 or 6 tracker.

So far so good.

sorry to dissent but just been through no fault accident with them and they have been close to useless, had to go to 3rd party insurer to organise my own replacement vehicle, communication is very slow

HI AB,

Sorry to hear that

does the poor communication have anything to do with the CV19 situation since March do you think ? Or do you think it’s just poor service generally?
