ACC has gone missing

After 14 months of waiting, we finally picked up our brand new Ocean. Yes, I will post pictures. It’s gorgeous. And it seems it’s not missing anything. Apart from… adaptive cruise control (ACC). Which normally comes as standard on the Ocean.

It’s just not there. Its settings are missing from the driver assist menu. And while the steering wheel has the cruise control buttons, they only activate normal cruise control, not the adaptive version.

The driver assist screen on the digital cockipit only ever displays an empty road - it never displays any cars there.

It’s hopefully just a software issue and I’ll get in touch with the dealer. But has anyone seems this before?

Yes it’s standard spec in Ireland (and not available as an option).

A good place to start might be an obd scan. That should give you a good idea of what's installed in your vehicle and if anything is reporting an error. T6forum.com has some people with experience interpreting scans.

Interesting. The brochure says optional on all trims in the presentation of ACC. But then the list of standard features of the Ocean later on I’m the doc mentions ACC being standard.

Thanks so much for the quick turnaround @calikev. I'm slightly horrified to see that the only mentions of cruise control in the doc are:

• Forward collision warning incl. autonomous emergency braking, without adaptive cruise control
• Cruise control system and speed limiter

I'll see what the dealer says tomorrow. At least, I did save a copy of the config I wanted that clearly lists ACC as being a standard feature. And that's the file I emailed to the dealer when I originally placed my order to give him the list of options I wanted. So we have a written record in his emails that ACC was definitely part of the deal here.

Dealer got back to me and confirmed that ACC is definitely standard (and he rang Germany as well to double check). He doesn’t know what happened or how to fix it but is looking into what we do next with his technician.

We have the van booked to get looked at on Monday. Primarily to look at another issue (the carpet under the passenger seat and in between the two front seats is soaking wet) but we mentioned the ACC as well (together with some other issues).

We can only leave the van for a day as we’re off to France the Wed so I don’t expect anything to get fixed. But hoping to at least get an idea of what is wrong and how it will get fixed.

Try to see if the wetness correlates with driving with the aircon on or standing in the rain.

Just dropped the van to the dealer to look at the various issues (water leak on the passenger side and loud “click” where the engine stops/starts).

Go to chat with the salesman (who has been very helpful throughout I should say - very happy with him) about the missing Adaptive Cruise Control. What he said was mind-boggling.

When I configured the van, I picked the ‘"Side Assist" Lane change system incl. "Lane Assist" Lane keeping system’ option. According to VW, picking this option automatically removes ACC and replaces it with standard (non-adaptive) cruise control.

It makes no sense. There is no mention of this anywhere. And the config recap you get on the online configurator clearly mentions ACC as still being included.

They’re now looking at whether this can be retrofitted or if it’s going to involve ordering a new van.

The odd thing here is that this must be some kind of weird Irish specific quirk. If that was also the case in the UK, I’m sure I would have heard about it here before.

Our first van always had a very loud click from the battery charging relay when the leisure batteries were low on charge. It was noticeably louder than when they were nearly fully charged, almost as if the extra current going through the contacts made them stick.

Yes, must be a quirk, as I have both Side Assist (standard on UK Oceans) and Active Lane Assist with Side Assist (as part of the optional Driver Assistance Package) alongside ACC (standard on UK Oceans)

Sounds like the missing no charge standard flooring option on the UK configurator. Seriously, the descriptions of the many and varied options are so non-intuitive. For example option "agm battery with increased alternator capacity". Cali Chris says the alternators are the same across the models and options.

The water leak has been fixed (the air conditioning system hadn’t been properly fitted in the factory and caused water to leak into the passenger footwell.

The loud clicks with the engine start/stop feature are apparently normal (as @andyinluton mentioned above).

As for the missing ACC: it can’t be retrofitted. So they’re now looking at ordering a new van for me - this time with ACC. I’d get to keep the van I have in the meantime. This is the weirdest thing.

Can’t fault the dealer - he’s been brilliant from the first time I contacted him to order. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place but I’m confident he’ll put this right.
