I'm still confused and after reading earlier posts on the subject I feel even more confused.
We have received our latest reminder to tax our 2019 California and it comes in at £520, which is pretty eye watering but maybe correct.
However according to the Govt guidelines (V149) we should be paying £475 but after that I got a bit lost ...
Anyone with a definitive view ?

Rate is now £165 + supplement £355 second year onwards.

I thought the California (except beach tour) was not classed as PLG's but a motorhome and was £295 per year without the luxury supplement?

I must be wrong?????

And a shock as Im about to take delivery of a New Ocean but still have a 3 year old LR Discovery Sport and coughing up the added supplement each year...please dont tell me ive got to fork out twice?

You are correct for a new Cali.

There were some back in 2019 registered as mpv ( as is the current beach tour) that are treated exactly the same as cars with the supplement, then the rules changed yet again…..

We have 2008 California automatic, it was registered as a diesel car and we haven't been able to change this. Tax bill this year....£650.

Is that a 2.5ltr one that fell into the 'Chelsea Tractor' emission bracket for VED?

All based on individual vehicles.

Government quote at the time was those that can afford a £40K and over won't mind paying extra Tax!
One of those cost thresholds that have remained fixed since April 2017, will soon be virtually impossible to find a family vehicle under that.

Fortunately Cali's were mostly reclassified as PLG for VED just to add to the numerous VED rates that apply.

You can only compare VED/Road Tax on same year/vehicle model as there have been so many changes over the last 10+years.

Feel your pain it balances up in yrs 9 if I remember rightly.
Yes it looses the £325 extra in year 7, so after that it will be the cheapest Cali to tax.

Who can tell how much vehicle tax we will pay in the future. You can see now with electric vehicles being taxed from 2025. This is just the start. What we pay now is nothing compared to what we will pay in the future. Just have to get used to it if you want to drive on UK roads. Vehicle tax is just another tax which all goes into one pot then shared out to the most deserving and road users have never been top of the list of the deserving.
Next it will be cycles with electric bikes paying the most plus compulsory third party insurance. Watch this space it will happen.

Paid £330 for my 2015 SE california last August

£275 last time.

Mine went up a VED Band from order price to DVLA rating, apparently due to Factory fit of Awning & Tow Bar causing VW to add a few digits to order quoted Emission figure.

All seems a bit random. Our 2020 Ocean just renewed at £309.75 for the year to Nov ‘23

SomeT6''s were registered when they atracted high VED. A new T6.1 wouldn't.

I’m in Sweden, my Cali Ocean was delivered a few weeks ago. Road tax for years 1, 2 & 3 is 22,000 SEK per year. It was quite a shock. Year 4 it drops to 7,000 SEK. I rang to see if they’d made a mistake but nope, that’s how they roll here

Well, I feel very lucky to live in New Zealand. We have to pay an annual 'rego' or vehicle license which is around NZ$100.00 or 50 GBP. But there is a new vehicle 'clean car' or emissions levy, a one-off fee or rebate based on the imported vehicle's emissions. Cliff

Interesting: I too have a 2008 2.5 auto. I remember that, at the time, they were registered in the UK as some sort of commercial vehicle, and the tax was very high. But a challenge was made by owners (supported by VW) , and the UK Government agreed to change it to PLG. This made a huge difference. My last tax bill ( just 2 months ago) was £295 for the year.

I pay monthly £27.56 which is a bit more than a one off payment but makes it easier to SORN it on the months I have no intention of using it.

Wow that’s over £1700 GBP. And I thought ours was a lot.
