Off road tyre opinions

We’re getting some Delta Classic wheels and looking at tyre options.

BFGs or similar too aggressive tread. Need 3 peak snow rating too.

Anyone have any real world experience of Delta’s Loder tyres, Falken Wildpeak AT or Pirelli Scorpion AT+?

Haven’t checked out load ratings etc which may narrow down the field a little and the tyre size will be 255 55 R18.

I’ve got the Falken Wildpeak AT on my Coast; superb, really like them; slight increase in mpg, but no noise (above ‘regular’ tyres). I’ve no real experience taking them off road, but taking the van to the French Pyrenees next week, they have the requisite 3 Peak Mountains Snowflake rating so should be ok.

Had Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on my D3 and they were brilliant. Did look at the AT+ for the California but alas no size.

Michelin Latitude cross great mud/snow tyre, mpg was way better than BFG. I had 235/55/17 worth seeing if they do the size you need.
Still look pretty chunky.

We used them for several years (Iceland, Spanish Pyrenees, West-Alps), and were very happy about them, yet:

• They didn't have 3PMSF, we used them as our summers only;
• I thought Michelin had stopped producing them? They advise cross climate as an alternative, is probably a great all season, but not AT.

We need to find an alternative, too, for next summer. Prefer 225/70/16, but not a lot of choice there...

I run Yokohama AT (GO15) on the car (Subaru) all year round. Get through anything in the winter and no noticeable difference in road noise or economy from summer tyres.Can’t fault them.

Are you wanting the 255/55/18 tyre for a vehicle other than a California?

I have agilis cross climate on kombi came with van. Live in cairngorms and they have been great in the snow here, and side walls look pretty tough too.
Unless you want the look I wouldn’t go with BFG as mpg is hit really hard

If you know you need snow tyres should you not by default fit tyres that will work with snow chains? I know it’s a bit belt and braces, but I carry chains (and a shovel and tow rope) even with decent 3 peak tyres.

My understanding is only the narrowest standard tyres can fit chains but only basing this on the manual. If anyone with wider tyres has fitted chains without issue would be good to know.

I’m not 100% convinced with my purchase.
Fitted rear sensors and a tow-bar. Going to use this season and re-evaluate end of summer.
I have plenty of mods in mind, that could easily wave goodbye to about £10k.
So need to be sure, before committing.

Had new Michelin Latitude cross fitted a couple of weeks ago via black circles website so still available. Local fitters said couldn’t get them. Such a shame if no longer available as a really excellent on / off road tyre.

I get that, I think a specific van and layout is a difficult decision and day to day use can easily suggest a different option.

We’re happy but sometimes I wish we had a slightly longer van, but 5.4m is so convenient day to day

We’re in Morzine at the minute and had a couple of nights in the van in the Aire in Les Gets. Worked really really well, enough space for three of us to move around, change, cool and shower, and even in the pop top it was warm too.
We expect this to be a keeper for some time and would probably do a little bigger if we’re able to spend more time travelling in the future with longer trips.

Looking at the Latitude Cross tread (M+S) it seems odd that it doesn't have the 3Peak rating, only a summer tyre in EU Legal terms..

Not worth the risk running M+S tyres in winter in the EU. If you have an accident I imagine you would be on thin ice wrt to insurance and the authorities.
