Seriously considering selling for something larger

Since taking delivery of our California almost 3 years ago, we’ve changed how we holiday quite a lot and they now generally involve more equipment and therefore the need for my space.
I had a look and drive of a Hymer Grand Canyon S today and it would give us the space we need. Albeit at a significant cost increase.
Still not 100% sure as I’ve loved owning the Cali and it’s so nice to drive but I’m probably going to make the change.
So, there may be a good spec T6.1 4motion for sale on the forum in the not too distant future… decisions, decisions…

We've just swapped into an Adria Twin Sports 640. Not a patch on the California to drive (the suspension can be crashy on very bad surfaces), but it's ok. Parking obviously needs more thought. But, for us at least, the camping experience suits us much better and it's got a massive garage and payload (4.2t chassis). Toilet is great and we've actually used the shower loads as the weather's been bad when we were away over Feb half term. Meant we didn't have to traipse to the shower block in the rain. There were a few more rattles then expected, but having gone round with the anti-squeak tape, it's now absolutely fine and is no worse than our old Cali (which itself was littered with foam pads everywhere!). Some still some compromises, but for our needs, it's worked out well. I've posted some photos.

Have you considered the Grand California? We moved from an Ocean to GC600 at the start of this year. Nice to have familiar features and to have warranty/servicing under one umbrella. We love it. And only £165 per year road fund tax!

Had a Volks Van all through my twenties & thirties.
Changed a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back. The camping side is far superior, and yes I had to buy a second car. However, I much prefer a 3 series touring over my old California.
The California was fun, but I don’t regret the change.

GC is king of the big van value IMO, I paid a little over £80k brand new last year with a 5+ promise. Crafter base as well, very difficult to find anything other than Ducatos in that ballpark.

Yes. We were pleasantly surprised to have this included in our deal too. But disappointed to find only a spare goo kit and no jack. But have now installed a spare wheel and hydraulic jack.

We’ve just swapped. Sold the Cali for £50k, and ordered an Opus folding camper after seeing one at the NEC. They start at £22k but go for the’ all in’ pack for £3k more and you get a pop up shower tent that connects to the unit. That additional £3k gives you a lot of extras.

Plan was to buy the trailer and a car for the money, but I went for a better car, so the total cost to change was +£10k.

We picked it up on Tuesday and tried it on the drive at the weekend. First impressions are we love the extra space. It’s a bit of work to get the basics sorted,, taking 20 mins on first attempt. This will come down as I made some errors. I estimate it will be around 45 mins to set up the inside and enjoy the first drink on site once I’m used to it.

Main reason for change was internal space. There is tonnes of head room and light, has proper seating, a microwave etc and a king size bed. Without doubt there are some differences, both positive and negative compared to the Cali, but that will be true no matter what.



I had a cali for over 10 years and loved it, but needs change and the time was right. Just need to try it for real now and can’t wait for that.
