I’m starting to look around at upgrading my T5 (2005 bilbos conversion) to a Dayvan Style ULEZ van, and I’m struggling to find exactly what I want (well I know what I want, I just can’t find them as 2nd hand and affordable they’re as rare as rocking horse poop). So I’m toying with the idea of a California Beach.

What I can’t work out is whether the beach came with any kind of cool box/mini fridge, and what the leisure battery is (capacity, alternator charged, easy to upgrade?). Can anyone shine any light on these Q’s for me? I’ve found YouTube videos but they’re all very cursory glances.

Any help would be appreciated.

Beach came with one leisure battery under passenger seat. No electric roof and rarely had the diesel heater option. There was a VW branded coolbox you could order as well as having a smaller bench seat and something that went alongside, not sure if it was just storage,

Buying a used beach is a right pain - the base spec is super basic so finding the right one can take a while

I really want the a Reimo Cityvan, the beach is certainly a lot easier to find than that.

Are there any specific good beach dealers around?

My problem is my budget is £35-40k, Californias all seem to be about £40k +, Reimo cityvans just don’t exist as used vehicles

Electric roof doesn’t bother me. Any idea how big the leisure battery was?

Older beaches tend to have better spec. Our old 2012 had uprated climate control, 7 seats, fog lights, camping heater & vw fridge / warming box (which is rubbish & drains the battery!)

The standard spec dropped off for newer models so VW could fill their pockets..some are even missing fog lights. If you don’t see fog lights it’s unlikely to have additional extras…I think that a later fully spec’d beach was more had a comparable price to an Ocean. (Might be wrong!)

Sadly the earlier models aren’t ULEZ compliant, and as it’s my daily driver that’s a need as my FIL insists in living in the ULEZ zone

Search for California Chris, he works for a dealer and did lots of YouTube videos on T6 Cali versions: beach, ocean & coast.

Beach single LB is 80A, located under passenger seat (U.K.) charges via alternator. Powers everything backwards of the a pillar. Can be run off Solar panels.

vw cool box was only a thermo cool box, (ambient temp minus a few degrees at best ) most people run a Compressor fridge / freezer such as Dometic CFX etc. ( freezes down to -20) runs off LB for several days without issues.

T6 Beach had lots of optional equipment, comparable to Ocean T6, the options were quite often left off order sheets to keep cost down.
In theory you can get a very high spec Beach with all bells and whistles that are normally more associated with Ocean model.

There are no specialist dealers selling Beach model, dealers will sell what they can get.

T6 Beach was offered in several seating formats the main ones are the rear seat being two or three seats. The former is an Ocean seat bed with a box alongside , the latter is a Caravelle seat bed , both options have comfort mattress available. 7 seats are possible via two additional passenger seats that are removable (similar to Caravelle)

The search function top right (spy glass) will turn up most if not all queries you have.

Very High spec Beach models do exist, but they are not very common and do not come to the market regularly (unlike full spec Ocean models which are two a penny).

Good ,luck with your search.

The very reason I ended up with an ocean rather than the Beach I was looking for originally. I'm very happy with the Ocean though and actually turned out pretty much perfect for just me an' my dawg.

Thanks, good info.

The reason I’m looking is because we want something newer and we really want a full width bed, the 3/4 width just isn’t cutting it for us. I’m also a keen diver so the ability to use the inside space for carrying dive kit, and still being able to sleep in is very appealing.

I will be honest though, the small leisure battery is something I wanted to improve on with my next van, especially as lithium batteries are really good now and the lead acid need replacing quite frequently, I also currently use fold out solar panels into an MPPT to keep my battery topped up, which often means I can stay away for longer periods and we’re looking for a van to start doing long holidays in.

Also the cost of retrofitting a diesel heater in a beach is about £5k which is crazy.

But the beach does have the basics of what I want, where as that seems to be harder to find in coach builds. A lot to think about really.

The full width bed in a Beach is fantastic and yes it adds greatly to the sleeping experience when there are two people sleeping down stairs (or multiple kids) , there is no issues as far as own space in bed, unlike the 3/4 beds.

Lithium batteries upgrade can be done at a cost. ( Use search function top right spy glass )

Solar panels on roof are adequate for most situations. see Solar Camper Solutions (no drill fitting of upto three solar panels ) Roger is a member here . Use search function.

I have 100w solar on roof and original LB no issues fridge plugged in for days whilst camping. Obviously the amount of solar determines how long you can go for without hook up, in general one panel is good enough during summer to keep one LB topped up daily

The night Heater Is a factory option so it's entirely possible you will get a Beach with one fitted. Study the photos in the ads very carefully, you'd be suprised how many adds do not list the full spec. Tell tale signs are the control panel by the rear view mirror and the vent in the drivers step and B pillar.

If on hook up you can use an electrical heater in the three pin socket located on the passenger B pillar (u.k. spec) just keep under 800w fan heater! (Same with electric Kettle)

I have a very very high spec Beach, there were several available via the same dealer at the time when I bought mine new from Dealer stock in 2018. Mine was pretty much the highest spec you could get by ticking almost all the option boxes, but that came with a corresponding price tag !

There is a misnomer that the Beach was / is a poor man's Cali, mainly perpetuated by those who have no experience of the Beach model and have only seen what is commonly referred to by nay sayers as "poverty spec ". There is nothing poverty about a well speced Beach, and yes they do exist.

Additional storage can be achieved easily = Vanessa window bags x 2 in the rear side windows (as well as under the Bench seat draws x3 )

Food and drink storage = cfx 35 compressor fridge freezer.

The Beach is a great vehicle for camping & leisure activities there is very little that can't be done in a Beach that you can do in other models.

If you want any specific info, photos etc or if you are Near Hertfordshire j8 M1 any time and want to see a high spec (7 seat) T6 Beach in the flesh, let me know and I'll do my best to assist. (Note 7 seats only come out for special occasions )

I wish you the best of luck on your search.

Edit: there are the original sales brochures and specs available in the resources section of the Forum ( you need to become a member to access them , membership allows you to PM other members and edit posts ).

Here is a link to California Chris own YouTube channel, you'll find everything you need here as far as tours and reviews of each model. Don't get Square eyes !

I’ve had no end of problems with flexible panels and I’ll never buy another one

I had 3 of Roger’s permanently mounted panels for 3 years until we sold the van, worked perfectly. Just fit once & forget.

I see from your previous post that you had the fold out panels. To be honest when I see people faffing about with them they look like a complete waste of time!

The bed in a 2 seat bench Beach can easily become full width when you need it to. A full width air bed on top of the matress not only sorts the lumps in the bed but fills the entire space.

Its the flexibility of a Beach that clinches it for many, storage when you need it for kit, full width, 3/4 width beds depending on the trip etc.

As others have said it's the options on a given Beach that may make or break a decision, the diesel heater is a good choice. Higher spec ones are out there but it's finding one for sale.

Good luck.

I had a photonic universe flexi fitted to the top of mine, that failed in just about a year, so was replaced under warranty but had to pay for fitting, and then the replacement failed again in 13 months so was out of warranty. Now I’ve got a dead solar panel on my roof that cost me £800 ish for 2 years use….. so I cut my losses and spent £200 on 200 watts of briefcase ones that plug into the MPPT.

Actually havigg by looked at that solar kit I would be tempted as it’s a none glue on one
